Hello All

New member so my first post forgive me if i post in the wrong spot etc. etc.

My question is I have recently acquired a 1984 FJ 1100 which requires a bit of work just looking at the collector box under the motor and mine has rusted through on one side. I was wondering why the need for the collector box why could I not just make up two y pieces for want of a better description that take the header pipes two into one rather than a very complicated looking collector box. I tried searching for this mod but could not find anything.
I am sure you guys will have considered this in the past

Also is anyone making fibreglass air scoops to replace the original I need a right hand one or can you buy the original part some place

Hi Kevin. And welcome.  It is usually the custom to do an introduction on the page provided.  I cant help with the collector box as I run an after market 4-1 pipe, but with the side scoops, they are known as "unobtainium" and are rarer than rocking horse shit. They will occasionally turn up on ebay,  but are not cheap.

Where abouts in Australia do you reside? Im in Grafton NSW. There are quite a few aussie owners on here.

Kevin... certainly you can make your own collector.  Anything that moves hot exhaust gases from the front to the back will "work."  Whether it would increase power, decrease power, or have no effect is anybody's guess.  But sure, you could do it if you have the tools and time.  Just make sure that you leave access for the oil drain plug.

As for the plastic bits on our bike, they are very hard to come by.  You might want to try making something from fiberglass.  Not easy, but might be your only choice.

Hi Kevin,

Welcome.  As Cutter said, a pair of Y adaptors will work just fine.  Sure, you might increase or decrease the HP by a couple, but the FJ really has a surplus of HP and VicPol are not known for their appreciation of fine machinery being used even near their optimum.
So, pick your place carefully, or pay the price. :-(

Your '84 came with double wall downpipes of which the inner pipe can rust at the head joint and then rattle in the outer chromed pipe.  The 86 and later bikes have single wall stainless tubes and don't rust out.  You can still get both OEM and aftermarket collector boxes, but the double Y and suitable link pipe will function just fine.

Enjoy your new/old FJ

Arnie
