I have to thank Mike Rieck for being a great mechanical problem solver. I rebuilt my carbs, among many other tasks in getting this old phoenix to rise from the flames of our local dump incinerator. Somehow though, I couldn't  get the fuel mixture adjusted correctly, and the bike was running marginally. Mike agreed to give up a part of his Saturday to help. On disassembling the carbs, he noticed rather quickly that the adjustable jet needles that I retained did not feel right as they set in the slides. While they moved laterally, they were fixed in the vertical plane where there should have been play. After removing the needles from the slide, and reassembling, it became apparent that the spring in the assembly was not functioning correctly. My carbs had been modified for K&N needles, and the washers that sit on top of the needle circlip to keep the retaining spring aligned and working correctly  were missing.

I never would have  found this on my own. While I know these washers exist on the 1200 carbs, I can't  tell if they were ever present on the 1100 bikes, they are not listed separately on parts fiche.
Mike found the problem by experience and intuition. Wonderful to have such a knowledgeable friend!
