Gasoline In Crankcase '85FJ1100N

Good Morning,

While I have carbs off, decided to take a look at the engine oil.  Almost overflowed my 5 quart drain pan!  Strong smell of gasoline, too. 

Carbs are in bad shape as it sat for 5-6 years.  Will be replacing o-rings (and two broken main jets) and cleaning everything.  Is this just a result of sitting and carbs getting so bad that slides were basically glued in place in the carb bores?

BTW, what is the N designation?  I see some parts are for emission and non-emission systems - how would I know the difference?  Thanks...

Not 100% on the N designation but on most Yamahas there is a letter at the end of the model name to identify it as a certain year/model. Pretty sure my YZF is a 'G' and my YZ is a 'J'

As far as the carb parts go, I believe that RPM stocks a rebuild kit with all the parts needed to freshen them up. If not I am sure he stocks all the parts. In any case he is very knowledgeable on all of the variations to the carbs over the lifespan of the FJ.

Your carbs look like they are off a FJ 1100 ?  There should be 2 points at which the gas will not flow when the engine is shut off.  At the petcock and then the needle and seats.  Looks like both have failed if it leaked while shut down in storage.  While you are servicing the fuel system you might take a look at the fuel shut off at the petcock also.  Depending on the year of FJ there is at least 3 different main fuel shut off systems.

Good catch on finding the problem. What year is your bike? There is a safety mod to one of the fuel shut off systems that might apply.

If the carbs have been sitting for 5 or 6 years they probably need a good cleaning for sure. Pay a lot attention the pilot jets. They are a bugger. There orifice is about the size of a pin head and plug easy. There is a lot of good info in the files section on the carbs http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?board=21.0

The "N" was the model designation for the '85 1100.  The '84 was an "L" model

Additionally, "NC" and "LC" mean they are "California" models which have all the emission equipment
