Gold dots and pee cups

I posted in the maintenance section to clear up a few questions- and no one of those is going to lead me here.

I have a crunchy front brake lever- and since I knew I was going to go to blue dots (or gold or silver) anyway my diag process shifted into an R&R process.

I found a matched set of gold dots.  Ordered those.  I didn't order the R1 master.  I'm weird and wanted the levers to be from the same bike.  I know Ill get made fun of for going with pee cup masters- but I bought a set of RC51 master cylinders.

I was going to get superhawk cyls, but I figured for the same money I might as well go with the -51s.  Once things show up I will start with some pics.  Stay tuned!

Well everything has shown up over the weekend- calipers, master cylinders, and new levers.

It's been too dang hot to want to go out to the garage and start work though!!  :diablo:

Anyone know if there is going to be a hang up with the lever switches adapting to the Yamaha wiring?

I am using a Honda VFR800 Clutch Master and a Honda VTR1000 Brake Master. They were both plug and play. You should have no issues with the clutch switch or the brake switch.

Awesome- thanks!

I'll take some pics as I get the change over done.

FINALLY had weather below 90 so I managed to get the calipers and master cylinder swap done.  Holy cow!!  WAAAY better braking performance than before!!  I don't even have new pads on yet!!  And I'm using the stock lines for now too!!  I know the piston hang up on my stock master wasn't helping anything but this set up has a lot better initial bite, better feel, and tons more power.  I bet I'll be really shocked when I get the lines and pads done.

I think I might be missing a lever piece for the clutch master- so that didn't get done today.  I'll have to do a little digging and get back to it.

At least for now I have more confidence in the front brakes.

OH- I thought I'd read somewhere that the gold dots have AL pistons and the blue dots were steel- is there any truth to that?  I only ask because bothe blue and gold dots could be had on an 03 R1 so I'm wondering why Yamaha would do that.

Correct that the god dots have the AL pistons. Not sure when the change occurred on the R1 but it may well have been a mid year change (or offered with certain color ways).

There is no difference performance wise with the different types base on my experience although it was a common swap to put the steel pistons in for race applications for better performance when extremely hot. Not an issue with HH type pads.

As far as pads go, unless the pads in the calipers are worn out I would not replace them. The stock sumotomo pads are very good for a street pad and other similar pads do not offer any real advantage in street applications. Usually aftermarket pads give a slightly different feel with more or less initial bite but overall performance wise there is no real advantage. For race applications there are several options but the stock R1/R6 pads are some of my favorites. On the track I have warped the backing plates on EBC, Ferodo, and Vesrah,  but other than a loss of grip when extremely hot the stock pads that came in those calipers work in an amazingly wide range.

on the R1 mid year 2003 they went from non radial gold dots to radial gold dots.

FJZ1 1200 - It'll do me just fine.
Timing has much to do with the success of a rain dance.

I was short a piston for the clutch master- so I just got that swap done yesterday. Everything turned out great. I like the RC parts. Adjustable levers are nice too.
Here are some pics- hope they load alright!

I don't recall the forks changing mid 03- wouldn't have made much sense with the 04 R1 being a completely new bike.
