FJ 12 carb flooding

Hi my fj 1200 carbs are floodiing ,it happened after crap got into the carbs from the tank :( Ive stripped and cleaned them out numerous times in the past few days they are absolutely spotless inside now but they still piss petrol ,I even purchased another tank which was spotless and rust free inside so its not that .. its driving me crazy  :wacko3:.. I think Im now an expert @ getting fj carbs off and on.. lol any ideas guys ??? cheers

By looking at your avatar pic and it being a 1200 I am guessing your FJ is an '86/'87 gravity feed year. My first concern is the petcock. Is it an OEM petcock and does it stop fuel flow when the engine is off? This is a safety issue so it is very important. As a side safety note, has your petcock been safety wired to prevent the elbow from falling out? Back to the pissing carbs.... The next feature to stop fuel from over filling your carbs are needles and seats with help from the floats. The needles require good condition tips, the seats require good condition o-rings. Then the floats need to be set at the proper height and not hung up on anything preventing proper float movement. If all of that is working properly then it sounds like you still have some crap debris preventing the needles to properly seat and stop the fuel flow. Can you see if just one carb is overflowing or is it all of them? Knowing which carb can help you find the solution a little quicker.

Hi thanks for the reply ..my fj is a 93 3xw ,hmm yeah it might be the O rings in the needle seat, I take it it should be a tight fit in the carb ? mines is a bit loose that you can move it when the small screw and keeper is removed ... I think it starts off as one then the others decide to join in .. :(

Well if your FJ is a '93 then it is a Fuel Pump (FP) year. The petcock is either wide open or closed. The FP is now the fuel stop when the engine is off. You need to check if fuel is still flowing with the engine off. If so then the FP is not working properly and needs repair/replace. The needle seats should feel snug due to the o-ring. If not then inspect them for cracks or other damage and replace as required. If you pulled them out and then replaced them it may have disturbed how they were seated and putting them back may have split or damaged one or more. O-rings cost very little considering the cost of a fire. Might be a good time to do full rebuild of your carbs with new soft parts and SST fasteners.

Hi  yeah the fuel pump works ok I think the problem is the o rings in the needle seats cos they dont feel snug ..more like loose .. Ive went ahead and ordered a complete rebuild kit for all the carbs.. o rings,needle valves and seats from my local bike shop .. once again thanks guys for the replies and pointing me in the right direction  :good2:
