Hi Just about ready to put my Clutch cover back on a 1991 FJ1200 Motor, that I am getting ready to install into my 1985 FJ1100.
Can someone PLEASE advise if you use Gasket Cement on both sides of the Clutch cover Gasket before installing.
Also has anyone ever fitted  a 1990> FJ1200 Motor into a FJ1100 before.
Any Hints or Tips  about fitting the Motor. What to look out for etc.
As far as I have been told, the only thing I need to do is swap over my FJ1100 twin point  ignition onto the FJ1200 Motor.
I would be thank full for any info at all .
thank you
regards Phil from Aussie

I don't know about any concerns or issues about swapping a '90 FJ1200 into a '85, since I never attempted it. Others here may know.

I have replaced the clutch cover gasket three or four times when doing clutch work on my FJ's and have never used any gasket sealer. No leaks aferwards. I have used non-OEM gaskets from RPM Racing, and I recently used an OEM one, that curiously did have a couple of strips of pre-applied sealant on it. Neither type has leaked.

I also made sure that any residual gasket material from the old gasket was removed from both the engine case, and the clutch cover, before I installed the new gasket. Make sure that you have the correct screw in its correct location on the cover's install, as they are different lengths in a couple/few places. And use a torque wrench when tightening them, since they have a low torque callout. The Files Section has a writeup that shows information too.

Put it on dry, the oil from the inside will make it swell giving a good seal. If fitting one without dowels to hold it in place, you can smear a bit grease on one side but that is just to hold it, not improve the joint.

As for fitting different length bolts into an irregular cover, poke them all in loose, if they are in the right holes, they will all protrude by roughly the same amount. Don't worry about remembering which one came from where.
This method applies to pretty much everything automotive.

I hope you are using the term gasket cement loosely. Usually anything called cement sets like concrete and is shocking stuff to remove.  There are great gasket sealing products out there than can be peeled off with your fingers should you need to remove the cover again.
