I've been riding happily for a while now. If any remember my plight from a while ago, I'm grateful to be able to say that my FJ is well toward recovery. I've not taken care of everything yet, due to speedbumps along the way, like when I had a certain shop replace my back tire, and they left my bike out in the rain; I must have a bad seal or some such someplace, because I wound up making it half way home and having to trailer the bike the rest of the way because of water in the gas. Not only that, but after I got the water out I noticed my front tire pissing air, and discover my front tire's valve is split wide open because they tried to give me a front tire I did not ask for, which they had to remove and replace with my old tire, somehow screwing up the valve in the process and failing to point it out to me.

At any rate, I got discouraged, got encouraged thereafter, knuckled down, and fixed their screw-ups myself. While I was at it, I fixed the cracks in my front fender with a plastic-welding-ish method disclosed to me by Fred (thanks again, Fred), changed oil, and put on the spin-on filter adapter from RPM. At the recommendation of another forum member, I've been putting a bit of Seafoam in my gas each time I fill up in an effort to banish gunk from my carbs and hopefully stop the floats from sticking (good so far; they haven't stuck for at least a month, though I think the Seafoam is fouling my plugs, since I think I've been hearing a phantom misfire from somewhere during warmup). I'm still putting things on the to-do list the more I ride, but I feel like the list will start shortening soon. My next objective is to work the brakes over (flush, refill, bleed, maybe replace lines, yadda yadda etc. etc.), and still on the list is second gear stank (found a friend of a friend who's already agreed to help me with it; just gotta get the parts and motivate him to help out). When I take the bike all to pieces for the transmission project, I'll fix the rest of the cracked plastics, and then painting help from another friend of a friend (hopefully; I know a guy, but I haven't pitched the idea to him yet) will finish me out (until I put more on the list, that is).

These things aside (though not entirely; I find some of the wrench work somehow satisfying), I've been enjoying the brief time I've had with my FJ so far, and I thank all of you here for enabling me to so do. I hope to make it to a rally, too, whenever that'll be...
Try not. Do, or do not; there is no try.

My FJ life gets better every time I learn how to do one more thing myself. My FJ would just be like other bikes I have owned. Need something fixed, tune up etc... Take it to the mechanic, looks as young as my oldest son, says let me see if we have the manual for a bike this old.  Wait till you decide you want to mount and balance your tires.... It really does get better when you become your own FJ mechanic. We will help you take on the new stuff when you are ready for it...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

It is good to hear the progress you have made and that you have further plans for your FJ. You should possibly think about attending the FJ East Coast Spring Rally coming in the middle of May. Just about the best way to meet FJ owners, gaze upon some awesome FJ's, and get face to face answers to your many ideas about your bike.

Oof. Is the date yet defined in exactitude? My college graduation ceremony is right smack in the middle of May, on the 16th. I can't miss it; means too much to my mum and dad. Would be a bummer if the dates lined up just right to keep me from the rally, but it can't be helped.

Funny. That could be sooner than you might imagine; that whole song and dance with the shop I took her to was enough to at least convince me to take the wheel off and trust them only with that rather than the whole bike.

Was gonna see if u wanted to ride up with us but graduation would put a damper on that. Were leaving out from Santee S.C.

Damn. That would've been hella math. I still haven't heard a specific date for the rally, though, (and the calendar did not have the answers I sought) so maybe I'll get lucky or some such. But I'm not holding my breath. Honestly, I'm now starting to worry more about even riding my bike, much less hitting a rally. It's beginning to sound like I'll be off to Taiwan for an undefined amount of time sometime after graduation, to teach English and stay with family. I'm not sure there are high chances of the TSA allowing the Blue Dragon aboard the flight... :nea:

Well done, repairing the so called "mechanics" work. You will get to the place, that no one else touches your bike. Keep it up.
