After changing 3 times my fuel gauge I´m going to make my friend Mingo solution: fitting XJ 900 1991 on gauges inside the FJ dashboard.

Only the model that I have to look for is from 91 to 93, with 9.500 rpm redline

Thanks Alf...so I need to look to the EU or UK for the 1991 Yamaha XJ900? (the XJ was not imported to the USA)

Did you change the sender unit in the tank? If not, did you need to adjust the FJ's float rod?

The red window on the XJ gas gauge, is that a gear counter?

Before you do, you might try connecting a good heavy ground wire (maybe from the bike end of the battery cable)
to the instruments.  A shaky ground connection can make the gas needle bounce.

Yes, Pat. 1991 to 93. From 93 on the red line start at 9000 rpm (like the pic)

Mingo says that the new fuel gauge is more accurate than the FJ unit. It doesn´t drop from maximum to near reserve in 50 kms. like the OE, so no necessity to modify anything more.

I remember from dealing with older vehicles adding a capacitor will calm needle fluctuation. Have to consult with an old gear head I know to verify placement of capacitor.Lot cheaper than retrofitting cluster.

Maybe an old points condenser wiuld do the job ?

I bet there are loads of those knocking about in the odds and sods boxes.

I had to Google sods box that's television right? Anyhow checked with my bro and boss connecting it between the sender and gauge should calm it down but both insist poor ground on the sender is probably the most likely reason.

Mingo tried with condensers, rewired, resistances, new ground installation... no way. Don´t waste your time!

"Odds & Sods" is a term for all the crap we don't throw away, like the drawers in the shed where everything gets shoved when tidying up  :yes:
