GIXER wheel price point

 I came across this wheel, the guy says he thinks it is from a 90 1100, its a 5 1/2 inches wide, polished in mint shape, he is asking $250. No calipers or anything else, just the rim. 250 is a little rich but I am not sure how rare they are, it would be nice to have all the components with the wheel but its wheel only. What do you think of the price and just how rare are these wheels getting?

They aren't that rare. I picked mine up with the brake caliper, all the brake parts, spacers and a new Dunlop Roadsmart tire for $350 total. Best to get all the parts from the same donor bike. That way you're not guessing on all the spacer parts.

I had no takers or offers at 1/2 that for a GSXR 1100 wheel.

I wound up trading it for a good lunch and the chance not to haul it home and put it back in my garage.

They are getting hard to find in Oz, that would be a bargain price for a good looking wheel like that over here,

I think I'd hold out until you can find a donor with everything that belongs on the axle. Trying to source spacers, caliper, caliper mount, etc, can get long & expensive. I had to piece together a rear end once. Ended up missing one "special" spacer. Could not find one in the USA. Was on the verge of contacting a machine shop to have one turned, when I found the correct spacer in the UK. Shipping was more than the part, but I was damn glad to have it.

I could not agree more with this advice. It took me 3 GSXR rear caliper brackets before I got one that would work.

I'm going through this same thing at the moment. Bought a wheel for $100.00 complete with sprocket and disc which is cheap, although both will need to be replaced as disc is worn and sprocket although in good nick is too big. I found a caliper with bracket on eBay, cost all up with postage and conversion from the USA $160.00. Still need new bearings, spacers, seals, disc, sprocket, brake hose and tyre which I can get here, but will add more $$$ to the cost.

Helps a lot if you know what model the wheel came off too, in my case 4.5 inch x17 = 89 gsxr 1100, that way you know exactly what parts to order.

If you can find a complete setup for a good price, buy it, but in my case, you just don't see them complete over here, so I've gone the hard way and will source the bits individually over time.

Modiatis is a bitch, but that's the price you pay if you want it.

I bought & highly recommend this tool for checking brake disk thickness: http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-thickness-gauge-66319.html  This tool will allow you to get past the "ridge" that builds up on the edge of the disk & provide an accurate reading.

Replacement brake disks are expensive or Chinese. Neither are desirable. I bought the front & rear wheels, suspension, etc, for a hybrid bike & did not check the disks other than they weren't grooved. Found out that 2 out of three were under the minimum thickness spec. I was looking at over $200 a disk for new replacements. I found a set on eBay that still had enough meat on them & went that direction.
