Anyone have experience with Garmin service?

I have a problem with my StreetPilot 2820.  When I called their Tech Support this am, I was told there was a 30-35 minute wait.  Seems kinda long for a Tuesday morning...

If it's not gonna be covered under warranty, I doubt if I will have it repaired, since they want $179, flat rate.

Well, ends up that on the 3rd call, I got straight thru to a live person.

I had an issue with paying the refurb price, since it was less than a year old, and I didn't cause the problems.  If I had done something to cause it, that'd be different

The first layer of supervision offered to split the difference, and fix it for half that.

The second layer told the first layer to fix it for free.      :good2:

If they end up sending a  refurb with the 2010 maps, that'll be okay, I guess...

That's what I had heard, but was having a helluva time getting through.

I got the StreetPilot 2820 for Christmas last year.  I asked for it because it had all the features of the Zumo for 1/3 the price, even if it was a discontinued model.

This unit had two separate issues.  It developed a crack in the bezel from the top left corner during the ECFR, which I noticed during that very wet trip home.  It is still watertight, but who knows for how much longer, as I don't know where the gaskets are on the inside.  Also, as soon as the weather turned cooler last month, the screen refuses to come up to full brightness unless it is warm.  Garmin didn't want to take care of either issue, even though I had taken very good care of the unit.  They claim that the unit should never be left in the car when not in use, and that is the cause of the screen issue, but I think that it should function well at least down to 40 degrees, since it is supposedly made for M/C use, after all.

Anyway, even though I had to debate for a bit, they say they are going to fix it under warranty, so we'll see.

I hope it works out okay, because I have otherwise been very happy with it.

Okay, I arrived home today to find a Garmin box on the doorstep, MUCH faster than expected.

They ended up swapping my GPS out for a new or refurbed unit (can't tell), and transferred all of my data (everything, custom POIs and all) over to it.

Has the new 2010 maps, too.

Not sure why the new unit took about 30 mins to wake up and find the satellites, but it is very cloudy here tonight.

Aside from the fact that they initially refused to do much at all, excellent service, especially considering such a quick turn around right ahead of Christmas.   :good2:
