Today I decided to do something about the brake-light connection on the Wingrack, for my V46 top case..............It was kinda dodgy, and didn't work very well...............

I actually had a few different situations going on that caused it not to work properly..................I addressed them all..

First off, here's the connection I'm referring to..........

One half is on the bottom of the case. It has little spring-loaded buttons.

The other half is on the Wingrack .............When you latch the top case on, the little buttons contact here.

The first issue I had going on was that the contacts were worn and dirty..............

The ones on the top case were easy.....................I simply chucked a wire-wheel in my Dremel, and cleaned em up!

The connector on the Wingrack also had another issue with it.................There is supposed to be a small plastic lug on either side to keep it from spinning once you snap it into the hole.
They were worn off on mine, allowing it to spin in the hole and not connecting properly.

After gently prying the bottom cap off, the wires are easily detached by loosening the set screws.

I then gently tapped out the contacts.........

I used my 120-grit flap wheel to clean and smooth the tops of the contacts.

I modified some small snap-rings to space the contacts higher in the plastic holder..........I used 2 per contact......

Ready to re-attach the wires, and snap the bottom cap back on.............

I lined it up where it was supposed to go, and used a small bead of hot-glue to keep it from spinning, and glued it in place.............

The other issue I had with the connection, was that the latch that locks the top case on, just didn't hold it tight enough onto the Wingrack.
The top case wiggled slightly, allowing the connection to flicker the lights...........
I removed the rear latch post, and ground a small amount off the bottom with the bench grinder, then re-installed it.

All fixed! :yahoo:
I even tried shaking the top case, and the connection is solid!  I also didn't have to spend any money on the repair. I just used stuff I had around the garage already.:good:

After the fix, I decided to go for an hour and a half ride cause the weather was decent today!

Good job!

The Wingrack I bought used for my `92 has the button installed, but none of my top cases has the brake light feature. The presence of the button did not allow for any of my top cases to snap in place, so I gently removed it.

Nice write-up of your fix. It does look like a nice feature to have.

Nice looking set up Alan ! I admire your approach to fix with what you have on hand (and using whats between your ears). :) Jolly good job  :hi:
