I'm trying to clean out a tank that has degrading and flaking Kreem tank coating and rust. Is there any product out that
gets rid of that coating? Its pretty bad as the old gas that came out was a light purple color and I can see the rust from the petcock hole and gas cap.

Thanks,
Michael

I really doubt that anything would remove the KREEM without ruining the paint, Its some really nasty stuff.

Mike,

When I purchased my 89 FJ it had a Kreem tank liner in it from the previous owner...it promptly started to flake off.  I took the tank off and removed the fuel level sender, gas cap and petcock and set it in the grass in my front yard.  I then took a garden hose and stuck it in at full pressure and proceeded to get A LOT of the liner out this way.  The Kreem tank liner floats at the top of the gas (or water) as it flakes off.  I made sure to keep my tank fairly full for a while so it would not get sucked into the strainer and/or the carbs.  I would see sheets of the silver tank liner each time I filled up with gas...sometimes I could reach some of it out with two fingers.  I gave it a couple of months and repeated the garden hose scenario.  This got pretty much all of it out.  Of course, after the garden hose treatment, put your tank back on and fill it FULL of gas to prevent rusting!  Hope that helps...

And just to make it known...KREEM SUCKS!!!! DO NOT EVER USE IT!!!  I have heard better things about POR-15.  Still...a tank will not rust if it is filled with gas and ridden occasionally.

I am in the same boat. But I  don't think my tank has been Kreemed. The PO used a red colored product. I am not sure what he used but I have heard of a coating called Redcote. Not sure if its a good thing or not. My problem is that the very top of the tank has some rust. It shows up as a very silty reddish colored substance in my float bowls. When it was originally applied I don't think it was evenly distributed. It is nice and thick on bottom of tank, but not enough on top. I was going to take the tank to a local Gas Tank Repair shop and get their opinion. Here in Ontario, gas tank repair on our vehicles  is quite common because of salting roads in winter...arrggghh...eats everything.

I thought Kreem was supposed to keep stuff out of the gas?

As others have said...KREEM sucks big time.  On the other hand...I have used POR-15 with two different resto projects, and have had great luck with it.  A great coating that is durable and converts any rust to a benign chemical makeup.

The key though...you MUST follow the directions EXPLICITLY.  Otherwise...Por-15 will create a disaster, and won't work.  Now...it is not hard to follow the instructions and apply the product correctly.  You just need to make sure to actually read and follow the directions.

I do recall reading that POR-15 indicates some possibility to remove KREEM with their products, but I have never done it and can not attest to it's effectiveness.  I have also heard of guys taking the tank to a radiator shop to get the old crap out.

Good luck!
