I am in the process of planning a front brake upgrade on my 89 FJ and was hoping I could get some definitive guidance as to which bikes I can source the blue dot calipers from - want to make sure I get the right ones?

Covered here many times, but as a newbie you're allowed, I guess

Many, many of the larger Yamaha bikes from about '98 to '06 or so came with blue or gold dot monobloc brakes.  The difference between blue and gold is the piston material, with the gold dots lighter aluminum.  These are the ones that do NOT use radial brakes and include models;
R6, R1, FZ1, FJR, Vmax, probably some of the 'cruiser' types too.
If you're in doubt that they'll fit, measure the distance between the mount holes.

I'm not the fastest FJ rider, I am 'half-fast', the fastest slow guy....

I just fitted gold dot callipers from Fazer 8 2012.
after research I can tell that You can buy any non-radial gold/blue callipers from Yamahas:
-Fazer (any size)
-R1
-R6

And probably other Yamaha bikes.
