A poster on this board said a fair while ago that in the 80's some mechanics used to call the FJ's "sprinklers" for the oil leaks out of the top of the head, I am guessing the rocker cover.  well it happened to me, and it is like a sprinkler!

I got to work and discovered oil all over my left boot, bad bad news that is!  so after work I checked the oil level and made a run for home.  When I finally got the tank off there was oil everywhere!  One of the rocker cover bolts had stripped it's thread and popped up like a sprinkler head and was letting oil out.

Needless to say I am becoming proficient with heli-coils.  I bought a kit and decided to do the lot before it happens again.

cheers, Gareth

In thirty years of ownership, I've never heard of this.

Never had anything even remotely related to what you're describing.

In fact, I've never read of this before.

Any clue as to why the bolt was stripped?

G'day,

I read the term awhile back in one of the old posts, cannot remember what it was in relation to.  I remembered it because I thought "how the hell does an Fj resemble a sprinkler?!" and what do you have to do to it?

well now I know...

I think one has to be very precise with the rocker bolts, otherwise they bugger the thread.

Cheers, Gareth

Should be an easy helicoil fix.  I've seen lots of valve cover leaks over the years, but never seen it described as a sprinkler.

Good that you're able to fix it easily.
