picked up some clutch chatter??

Installed new clutch..original finally gave up...used OEM fibers from Randy..one,new pressure spring. Steels all look new. Everything feels great...except on normal easy take off i am getting pretty significant chatter.  I drove about 80 miles today...blasted it several times and a couple aggressive take offs. Everything i could think of... short of a 5000rpm launch.  The only thing that could be considered 'out of the ordinary would be that the fibers sat in a pan with motor oil for about a year before i used them. i'm hoping it will getter better with time  :scratch_one-s_head:    any other suggestions?  thanks
89 FJ1200 saphire.blu owned 8-9 years.  By far the most satisfying of them all. Constant tinkering got me the best bike you could ever want.

I recently installed a new (OEM) clutch pack from RPM of fibers and steel. My old clutch gave out before the last WCR, very happy it was before, not during. I notice a shudder when letting out the clutch lever. But not like it affects power transmission, just a sensation... The launch from zero is really good now... Turns out I had an after market clutch set that had more than one sticking plates giving me all kinds of fits with hard shifting... Back to the shudder... I think it will mellow out as the steels and fibers bed in ....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Steels may have looked new but were they flat. Checked with a feeler gauge?    Pete.

Get used to it!  20,000 km's and counting. Mine does the same thing, I don't think it's improved at all, I think I have just got used to it. After enough time it becomes the norm and I don't really focus on it any more.

I have never tried a big clutch slip to try and bed it in, and won't, it's not that big a deal and doesn't effect the operation of it but it did annoy me at first having lost that silky engagement.

The only thing that changed (other than new fibres) was the wide plate and the spring removal.

Someone out there will have a theory on it.

Just a WAG from my dirty bike dats, but my money would be on a workn clutch basket.

The tabs on new clutch fibers are generally fairly square to give maximum engagement. Over time they will round off, especially if the basket is worn (notched).

Think square peg in a round hole.....

If the basket is worn the fibers can get out of alignment and bind in the not s flat surface. This will often cause chatter or poor engagement in dirty bikes so I see no reason it couldnt be a similar situation on the FJ. This was common enough when I was racing that I considered the basket as a wear item and replaced it every time I renewed the clutch. Does randy sell new (or reconditioned) baskets?

I had a basket on an older bike (CB900F) repaired due to excessive wear by a local machine shop who welded up the damaged areas and reground them to spec.

Good point.  I'm not particularly interested in fixing it but I am a bit curious.

Each time I have the clutch out of the dragbike I'll take a fine file to any notches that are starting to show to help prevent chatter.

Another possible cause can be eliminating the thin fiber and "chatter plate" at the bottom of the clutch.  I prefer to replace them with a full sized plate, but have to think Yamaha put those there for a reason -- maybe smoother clutch engagement was a design choice over better holding power?

i should have mentioned i did go to the 7 wide, one narrow arrangement...per pats write-up and Randys recommendation.. there is only 21k on a basket..easy life,no dragracing and it did not do this before the new clutch pac.  Best bet i come up with is the plates may have got a slight warp sitting that long...the pan they where in may not have been totally flat?           Lessor of all evils would be 8 new fibers.  I will also look for those 'high spots' mentioned. I will give it some more miles to bed in before i dive back in there.  thanks a million guys.

Seems unlikely as Mark and I have exactly the same issue and I can guarantee my plates are flat. I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy new fibres again thinking it will fix it.

 After removing the anti chatter spring, mine did the same thing. 28,000k on the motor.  I did it as per Randy's recommendation as well.
