Australian motorbike riders fall into one of six tribes, from adrenalin-seeking performers to money-conscious commuters, a survey has found.

The survey quizzed 600 riders across the country, identifying the six distinct groups.

These include those who ride as a lifestyle choice, those who drift between riding and not riding, those who ride for sport and those dubbed performers who have limited experience but lots of confidence on two wheels.

The survey was commissioned by insurance company InsureMyRide and comes as Australians take to using motorbikes in record numbers.

More than 560,000 bikes are now registered for use on Australian roads and more than 134,000 were sold last year.

"We've long suspected that different types of riders share a range of attitudes and behaviours," said InsureMyRide executive manager Graeme Brown.

"But for the first time research has shown that most riders fall into one of six unique classifications or, as we are calling them, tribes.

"The tribes the research has uncovered helps us to understand why motorcycle riders behave the way they do, from their choice and frequency of riding a bike, their propensity to take risks while driving and their motivations for choosing two-wheels over four."

The survey put most riders in the specialist tribe.

They tend to be more experienced than other riders, spend more time on their bikes and are less nervous and stressed while riding.

At the same time they are less competitive than some riders and are generally very safety conscious, wearing protective gear for even short trips.

By comparison, performance riders are generally younger but have a confidence about them that leads to taking more risks on the roads.

They love the adrenalin rush they get from riding and a majority think it's okay to speed.

Riders in the sport tribe are riding purists.

They also can't live without the adrenalin rush though prefer the controlled environment of a riding circuit.

But they still value safety, leading most to always wear their full protective gear.

About 16 per cent of those surveyed were found to fit into the lifestyle tribe.

Bikes are an entrenched part of their lives and they would choose to ride a bike over driving.

They still tend to be conservative on the road, sticking to the road rules and riding safely.

Also cautious on the road are the commuter tribe who value the practicality and the chance to save money offered by riding cheaper motorbikes, including scooters.

Commuters have become frustrated by busy roads and the high cost of petrol and have opted for two-wheel transport as a result.

A majority ride because it's economical and they rarely break the road rules.

The final tribe identified were the drifters, those who ride infrequently and may not even own their own bike.

Many drifters may have more than 20 years riding experience but they remain non-committal suggesting they have lost, or never had, a real passion for riding.

Mr Brown said his company hoped to use the research on riders to draw attention to aspects of their riding behaviour.

He said that could make conditions safer and more enjoyable for all road users.

Might be a bit over-generalized... depending on the day of the week and how I felt when I woke up that morning, I could probably fit in four of their classifications. And at different times in my life, I could have fit in all six - but when you ride an FJ for commuting, it ain't because of the fuel economy!
