Hello all,
Ive been reading up quite a bit but have some questions.

First, a bit if information about the bike.  Its a 1991 FJ1200. It has 16000 miles on it and has been sitting for about 12 years.  The owner did not do much in the way of prepping it for its long sleep.
After getting it home and just making sure the motor turned over i started to take it apart.  Tank off, carbs off.  Tank emptied of the most foulest "gas" ive ever seen. Tank cleaned, sending unit removed and cleaned, fuel petcock removed and cleaned.  Inside of tank doesnt look great but doesnt look too bad.  Carbs were a mess!  Started to take them apart......three of them the slides were frozen and the bowls looked like somebody baked maple syrup in them.  After some dis-assembly and realizing that I might be a better off with a new set, I hit ebay and found a set from 89-90 fj1200.  (Let me state that I bought them before I knew the bike was a 91, my friend who owned the bike reassured me it was a 89, after some reading and researching I soon found it was a 91)

So got the Carbs today.  They are completely rebuilt and look great.  Put them on the bike and used a portable tank as a fuel source.  Bike fired right up and seemed to run pretty well.  My questions are this..........
1. How much difference is there between the 89 carbs and a 91?
2. How hot are these bikes supposed to get?  After running for a while it seemed like the motor was getting real hot.  I have nothing to judge it from and could be normal.
3. When at idle and go to blip throttle i get a slight hesitation and then the rpms sound normal and its fine if i blip a few more times but if it sits again at idle will do same thing.  It doesn't stall.  Is that some sort of adjustment?

Ill keep it at that for now and appreciate the information this site has given me already.

1. The 89'/90' carbs are a different OEM part number than the 91'-93' models, but on a good note, they should work just fine.

2. The engine can get very hot while sitting still. If you are going to run the engine while in a Garage, Shop, or driveway for an extended period. Place a strong fan on the high setting, in front of the engine to get good airflow over the engine.

3. The FJ is very sensitive to having all 4 carbs synchronized to each other.

1) They are the same carbs.
2) it is air cooled, so a big fan or fans is required while working on running engine.
3) Who built the carbs?
3a) what jetting is built into the carbs?
3b) are the idle mixture screws adjusted properly?

4) what did the carbs rebuilder advise when installing them?

So, you're in Boston and sent your carbs to Cycle-Recycle in Indy for work?    :scratch_one-s_head:

It does now... was just curious how you found those guys.

Maybe I should stop by and see what FJ parts they have now.

So I asked the rebuilder for the specs of the rebuild. This I'd the info he sent me:
Main Jet 110
Idle Jet 37.5 Non bleed BS
Main Air Jet 155 (Back throat of carbs)
jet needle factory 5FZ74 3rd clip from top
Needle jet 378 Y2
Float height 22.3mm (+ or -) 1mm
Air screw 2 turns

Bike is running decent. Couple issues though. Get an slight bog off idle but once you give it a couple quick blips your by it and sometimes the idle hanges around 2000-2500 rpms.  If I'm in gear I can let clutch out a little to drop rpms and they stay there.

I have not yet synced carbs on bike. Don't have a vac gauge yet.

Any thoughts?

You will have to modify carbs for the pods. Should a replaced the 37.5's with 40''s anyways. Randy will walk you through jetting and carb changes. Also see:fjowners.wikidot.com/pods

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.
