Hi all. I have fulfilled a long time want and picked up an 85 FJ1100 a little over a month ago. I have owned Yamaha bikes in the past and loved them but have always wanted an FJ. No complaints with the bike and love riding it. Smooth, fast, responsive. The only repair i have to make is that the clutch slave cylinder weeps so i have to top off the reservoir every week or two. Was wondering if anyone had pics/tips/tricks of how to replace the seals. I ordered the kit and I know how to bleed lines. Any help would be appreciated. Love the site.

It's really not that hard to do. Sometimes they are rebuildable and some times you have to just replace them. RPM stocks the replacements and kits also. I rebuilt mine once then just got over it and bought a new one.

Tips, ? TQ on those bolts is only 7 ft lbs I think.  They are hard to bleed for some. Every one has a different system. Personally I have had the best luck with getting some fluid down in the slave then I put a bunch of towels under the clutch master Cly and take the top off, fill , then very slowly with the salve cyl in your hand push in on the piston.  Now be VERY carefully because if you push to rapidly brake fluid will shoot up like old faithful (hence having the towels under the MC.... Release the piston, check the fluid and repeat a few times until you see no more air coming into the master cyl. Then mount the slave and bleed the old fashion way just see if there is any air in it.

Sounds more involved than it is. Only takes a few minutes. There are other potentially less messy way's. I just go for the fastest way for me.

Protect your belly pan (aka: chin fairing or lower cowl) brake fluid does not play nice with the plastic....

In other words...fix the leak right away, or take off your belly pan, or you will be sorry.

Visionwear,

For the small difference in price between all-new and a rebuild kit, I would just buy a new slave cylinder.  Done deal.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

For less than $100.00 you can have a brand new slave cylinder in the choice of Black or Silver.

Soon, the Yamaha order arrived in the US today and some of the slave cylinder that I have on backorder went right out to me. I should be seeing them later this week or early next week.

What part of north Carolina are you in? I'm planning to ride Tennessee all day today, some near the north Carolina border, leaving south Carolina today... If you are willing to host me for the night, I could do it with you and then we could go for a ride, if you're available.

I'll PM you my number. Contact me asap, if I don't hear from you I might head towards Chattanooga. (I'm slowly making my way back to Texas.)

That's a beauty of an FJ11, the 84/85 is near and dear to my heart. Someday I'll have one.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.
