Too much oil in engine

Hi,
I was doing the oil filter adapter install. This is the second time I've done it (Second FJ) and I ended up over filling the engine with oil. I had a 3.87 liter bottle of oil and there was still about half a liter left so I figured it would be ok. I realized that I didn't open the oil filler cap on the engine when I was draining it. There may have been some oil left in the cooler. I ran it a couple of times when filling to make sure that I wouldn't over fill and it looked good (right at the top fill line). I then checked it later on and the whole glass was full. There may be a little sliver left on the glass that is not covered at the top. I checked and I emptied approximately 3.30 liter out of the engine. The question is will I have to drain a bit or leave it as is. It's such a pain in the ass because I have to remove the exhaust to do it.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

You can work a thin  (~.25" or 5mm) plastic hose down into the oil filler opening, and siphon out as much oil as you want into a little flat pan.  Put the bike up on the center stand, so you can read the oil window correctly as you go.  If you need to buy new thin tubing, the hobby shops sell it as fuel tubing.  I have lots of thin oxygen tubing (from smokers, who go through miles of that stuff).  Wait until the engine is completely cool, of course.

That sounds great. I wasn't sure if I could stick something in the filler hole but I will try and get back to you.

Thanks,
Mark

You should be fine if you can see air at the very top of the window.  That's exactly where I want mine!

I typically put in 4 qts after a change and don't look back until its time to start looking for oil consumption. I also usually end up with the sight glass nearly full of oil.

Hi,
I ran it a couple of times when filling......
Thanks,

What that is doing is leaving a lot of cold, thick oil hanging in the motor and checking the level this way is going to give you a low reading. When it eventually runs back to the sump it will be over full.

As Hooligan said, it you can see any air at all, even a sliver, in the sight glass, you're good to go.

Once past the sight glass, unlike a dipstick, you can't tell by how much it is over filled.
The engine is deemed to have sufficient oil for normal operation anywhere between the upper and lower marks. There is a point (varies with the particular engine) where over filling can do all sorts of nasty things.

Removing the filler cap when draining the oil won't effect the volume of oil that drains out.

Only ever drain the oil when it's hot.

I buy my oil in 1 gallon jugs and use the whole thing and it is just over the top of the sight glass.
That little extra oil keeps that pesky Oil level light off during "spirited acceleration"!

Well I went through sucking the oil through the hose between 30 - 40 times. Feels like I was playing the trumpet all night and I don't even play one lol. Right now the engine is cold and the oil level is right at the top line where it should be.

Thanks for the help,
Mark

SO, Leon, it's "normal" to get the oil light when running hard (like real hard, for a while I mean)? I've been worried about that, I use castrol 10-40 w half quart of lucas stabilizer and K&N filters. Ant tricks to avoid the light? (I'm scared of the light man  :rofl2:)

Walmart, that evil mom and pop shop destroyer, you know the one...anyway they have an AWESOME (I think it's penzoil, YUCK, but a good pump) for about $10 in the auto section that I use for everything, comes with about 1/2" hose, and some tiny line, enough to put clear down a transmission line if need be. You can use it to fill (even baskets balls, etc.) if you find the need as well. I have a Vance n Hines pipe and it SUCKS getting to that EFFIN PLUG  I've figured out that if I remove the rear pipe mount bolt then prop the can down with a 2x4 between it and the passenger peg I can get a wrench in there....BUT I'm getting a Fumoto drain valve (EBAY), you push up then over and you're draining. Pretty much imposable to have a failure by design, especially if you put the lever towards the rear. It's a double oring(teflon or similar I would imagine) ball valve like they use in the oil/gas field, they're TOUGH. We use them on 3 million dollar cranes and ALL the work trucks etc. my bike will be fine, and it turns draining into a piece of cake :good2:
