I just bought my first FJ. Its a nice 1990 1200 that's been garaged most of its life with only 34,000 on her. I'm looking forward to my fist long ride as soon as I finish doing a few things to her. This sight seems to be very informative. I hope to learn a lot and meet a few people on the road. I think we're do for a mild winter up here!!!!!

Fred

Welcome,

You're right there is a lot of good info here and some good times.

Thanks Fred,

Where are you from and what do you ride? I hope I don't have to put snow tires on my machine! The last mild winter we've had up here was in 2006. We rode all winter and it was great. RD

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the welcome. Ya, she's in nice shape, can't wait to ride her.
Last time I was down in your neck of the woods was in 2007. I did a cross country ride after my son's wedding in AZ. It was super except for a small mishap just outside Roanoke on the Blue Ridge. We were on it to late at night, kept seeing lots of deer!!!! My buddy driving an 07 FJR hit one, thank God he had sliders on it. Saved the bike. Limped into Roanoke, threw down the Aleve for his sore shoulder and had a few cold ones. Other than that, a super trip. Want to plan one for next summer. Pete

Welcome here Road Dog.

Was the 'deer hitting incident' anything like this?

SH-T, Lucky boy!
Our "CRASH" was in total darkness on the Blue Ridge. Two deer looked right at us as we were going into a corner, they both broke to the right of us then all of a sudden one of them broke back right in front of my friend. There was so much fur floating in the air it looked like it was snowing. He was very lucky also, just a cracked collarbone. RD

Roaddog,

Hello and Welcome.   :hi:

Sounds like a great find with your FJ.

I had a deer jump complete over me on my bike once.  I had one jump completely over my car before as well.  But it is a little more unnerving on a bike.  I was hugging the tank and bracing for impact, and then no impact the deer cleared me without a scratch.  I was in a 1968 Olds 88 when the deer jumped the car.  He barly clipped the roof and the trunk, and there was no real damage just some fur in the trim.

Later.....  :bye2:

What kind of tires are you guys running?

OH you wont be catching me on the parkway at dusk/dark.... the deer are an epidemic of biblical proportions!  Especially around Sparta!!!!!!!!!!!! last time i was right where 21 crosses the parkway i couldnt even do 25mph much less 45 (or my *normal* parkway cruising speed of 60)
The yellow eye'd bastages were everywhere........

deer whistles?

I had my deer a long time ago, cooler night, fall season with little fog, saw the head out of right side of car, hit car, licked the glass all the way to the back of the car when the body caught up, nice dent in back quarter, state police dined well that weekend.

No question, it was a bone head move trying to push onto Roanoke at that late hour, especially when we kept seeing all those animals. There was a little place right on the Blue Ridge we could have stayed at. Won't do that again.
As far as the tires, I'd like to keep the rims and tires stock to keep costs down. Marsh suggested Avon's. Never rode those, I'm always been a Metzeler guy. I wonder if there are any other radial choices. Going to put on "Hot grips" so I can ride all Fall long and replace my winshield (MRA???) for better protection. Other than those few things just your basics oil, filter, check fork seals etc., etc. Thanks, RoadDog
