I've got my engine out to get made larger. So I'm going to powder coat my frame on my 86. It has the chin fairing. And I have done the gsxr rear wheel. Also put 2008 gsxr1000 inverted front end on it, pods, and suppertrap exhaust. I've gone back and forth on black and silver and can't make up my mind. Powder coat is kinda prominent. So I need a little help.

If anyone has some pictures of 86s with blacked out frames, if you could post here to help see what it would look like. That would be great

Thanks everybody!!  Dan

Oh yeah the wheels are powder coated satin black

If you choose black then the RPM case saver bars will blend right in. Or you could paint the bars silver to a similar effect. Are you keeping the Red & White colors?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Here is a photo of jscgdunn's black framed FJ. I think the black frame with the black R6 swing arm looks awesome.

Flynt did his frame in black but it is not red & white. With the black frame we change the engine color to the silver like delivered on the XJR1300.

You can see multiple picture here (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=5619.0) from the bare frame to the complete build with the silver engine. I think he also has a set of black and silver wheels, but I am not sure.

Frame, swingarm, and ideally trim like the rearsets should all match.  Will need some accenting someplace, like a silver cylinder or something.

I like black frames on red and silver bikes.

I think black would go well with "bambulance" colors too - especially with a black swing arm.

Yep...  silver are winter wheels (RoadSmarts) and blacks are summer (Q2/Q3 Dunlops).  Marc had a complete backup set of wheels, so it was easy to take the plunge.  I need to add one more rear rotor to the mix and I'm set for easy swaps.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am doing an 86 restoration myself and went with silver ( powder coat ) as I wanted it to look all original. I think black would look cool too. Go with your gut. The most important person to like it is you. Powder coating is sure an awesome way to do it.

If you aren't sure - use a roll or two of electrical tape to black out your frame and see if you like it.  Cheaper and easier to undo it if you don't like it.

What a dilemma. If I could be bothered with a complete engine out strip, i'd go for the black frame and swing arm just to alert other fjers that i'd put in the hours.

Thanks everyone,  looks like black is the overwhelming majority. I was leaning that way. Just needed a little push. I wish I would have thought of using the tape to see if. I liked it, problem is I already had it torn down when I posted this.

So I'm going to have an 86 with inverted forks, blacked out frame, black gsxr wheels, and 1350 engine. Hopefully done by April. So I can ride it down to Austin for the moto gp.

I have a 90 with the black/dark blue with the purple stripe. I planned on painting black and white but after putting the bike back together after powdercoating frame /swingarm and new 17x5.5/17x3.5 wheels I actually dig the factory paint. Yam really missed the boat, not painting frame/swingarm black. Pics to come soon
