Product report - Tankslapper paint protection

Some time ago I mentioned the "Tankslapper" tank protection (non sticky static film) with much enthusiasm from the forum.

One of the members organised for an FJ specific set to be added to the suppliers list and I never heard any more about it from anyone here.

Well, I ordered a set some months back and have used it many times.

I don't like permanent tank film (except on the spine at the back) and this is perfect. I apply it before any long ride, it only takes a few minutes. I don't worry too much about perfect alignment because it is not permanent and I don't worry about getting all the air bubbles out for the same reason.
It is a real treat getting back from a ride and not having to polish out the scuff marks from my knees rubbing the paintwork, just peel off the film and I store it on a mirror (or window) in the garage until next time.

To apply it I use a spray bottle with some water and credit card with a bit of velcro (the furry side) folded over the edge for a squeegee.

Below are a couple of shots of the bike with film applied to the knee indents only. I also have one for the top of the duck tail.

You can see the bubbles in this shot, although they did improve over the day, see below, I wasn't really fussed.

You can see from this shot that they are cut a tad small but still do a great job for not much money.

Sorry, I don't have any video, only photos, so it's quite possible none of this ever happened.

Looks like good stuff. Way better than the tank bras with straps or magnetic attachment schemes. If grit gets under them, it will do a number on the paint anyways.

I have seen this product before under different names. I like the non-permanence of it.

Thanks!

I got a tankslapper kit when I got the FJR.  I got the mixed set - 3M stick on pieces for the front fender and lower fairing, and the static pieces on the tank and saddle bags.

Mixed results.  The 3M pieces have held up well, although a bit harder to install properly.  The statics pieces on tbe saddlebags didn't last too long, in that they flew off after a while.  The pieces on the tank stayed put, more or less.  They eventually yellowed and became brittle after a couple years, but I think thats par.  I replaced the tank pieces using a generic sheet I got from Riders Warehouse, using the old ones as templates.

Thanks for the report Noel. It was your idea to begin with....

Yep, MoPar Steve and I visited the vendor last summer using Steve's bike for patterns.

I have not installed my set yet but I will do so when it's time for the WCR.
