Hi guys, my name Is Joe and I recently purchased a 1984 yamaha fj600.  From what I understand, they are kinda hard to find. Anyway, this bike needs some work but I will hopefully have her on back on the road around February or March.  Bike hasnt been on the road since 2007. First things to do on my list is to change the ingition with a new one, theres a toggle switch in its place now, rebuild the brakes, new clutch a nd throttle cable, change all fluids and plugs and clean the carbs and new fork seals. I started on the ignition today. I removed everything to get to the bolts that hold the ignition in place but its covered by a black plate that is connectedbto the tree/forks. Theres a big bolt that I beleive I need to remove in order to get to it but want to make sure I am right. I am hoping someone has done this before and could help me out on whst to do next. I attached a link to my photobucket. The bolt I am referring to is the large one on the right of the picture.  Any and all help or advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Joe, looking at the pic you posted, the large nut that you need to remove is holding the upper triple clamp to the steering stem.  You'll also find pinch bolts holding the upper clamp to the fork tubes.  These need to be loosened to allow you to remove the upper.  Don't know what you'll find from there ...

Good luck!

You should be able to get a 1/4" ratchet and a socket under the switch to remove the 2 bolts holding the ignition switch to the upper triple clamp without messing with the fork pinch bolts. Refer to the photo, item #'s 1-2-3.

And Joe, just so you know, according to my catalog the ignition switch is the same on the 600 and the 1100/1200.

I have them in stock as well as a round/tube key version.

Ignition Switch with Flat Key
Ignition Switch with Tube Key

Plus there is a sale going on too...

Thanks so much for the help. I will try and tackle this again on my next day off which is friday.
Racerrad8, I already ordered an ignition. I do need a throttle cable and clutch cable. I will look through your website and see if they are compatible.
AviationFred, thanks for the diagram.  I thought the bolts went from the top down rather than bottom to top. That will make ot easier. I will tackle this on friday along with the breaks and I will let you know how iy goes or if I have any other questions. Thanks for your guys help.

I finally got the ignition off and new on one. It took me alittle longer then expected because it was so damn cold outside. Thanks guys for the help.
