I have a hairpin corner followed by another when heading the last mile to my house. Coming home from work yesterday some lady pulled out in front of me from a hidden driveway. She saw me as I rounded the corner doing maybe 35 and panicked, slammed on her brakes which ended up making her giant suburban sticking halfway out in the road. Which forced me into the opposite lane of oncoming traffic for a second. If there had been an oncoming car then and there I wouldn't be typing this now. At the very least i would be  hearing an endless parade of "see I told you so's" from people nagging me about how dangerous riding street is.

Stay safe out there and watch those suburban hidden driveways.

Wow!  Nice dodge and a bit of luck!

On my big trip, I lost focus for split seconds on three separate occasions.  In each of those, I found myself over the line.  Each time, there was no opposing traffic.  Gave me a new respect for the +/- outcome of fortunate timing.   :shok:

Glad you came out of that one unscathed!

Good escape. Some days I wonder about beating the odds...
Was out recently on the KLR, and some girl took a quick glance and decided that she didn't have to stop for the stop sign, merging onto the state highway. THEN she saw me and squeaked to a stop in the oncoming lane. She was nice enough to wave me by!!!  :dash2:
That afternoon, I changed my helmet order from a silver one to the bright yellow choice. IDIOTS! The world is full of them, we just have to be more paranoid than the other guy...

I would have thought it imposable to drift off a sleep on a bike but many years ago I departed Las Vegas a little after mid night headed North on Hwy 93 and by the time I got up to the Well's area the sun was coming up and just for a moment I started to fall asleep (I had been up for at least 24 hours by then). Let me tell you it is the weirdest damn feeling in the world, like being drunk and almost falling off a bar stool (don't ask), instantly the adrenaline kicked in and I got wide awake...... scared the crap out of me. You can indeed go to sleep on a bike....

Okay...now I want to ask about the barstool incident(s)!!

When I was in my second year of college...ohhhh '93...My roommate on his BMW R75 and me on my Seca 550 took a girl each out to Joshua Tree National Park.  On the way home, my girl fell asleep on the bike on the I-10 going 75MPH!!!  I could take this in two ways:  1.  I'm a boring date.  I immediately dismissed this as preposterous.  or 2. I'm such a good motorcycle rider that she felt comfortable enough to grab a quick nap.   :good2:  Yep...that must be it!

I am sure you can relate to the bar stool....... :rofl2:  :drinks: You know that feeling when the stool for absolutely no good reason moves out from under you, your legs are rubber, brain is numb, and the whole damn bar is moving.....  :wacko1: :bad:

My wife went to sleep one time while riding with me up though Yakima on a BMW. I told her next time I was going to Velcro her on....... Two hard bags with 2 sleeping bags on top and a back rest, she was nestled in there just fine. A little top heavy going around corners after a few minutes I started playing around with rear view mirror while leaning over only to find her helmet kind of bobbing forward and to the side. She woke up when I put the brakes on to see if there was a problem... "Its not the destination, it's the trip"

My wife figured out years ago how to doze off & catch a few z's while riding on the back of my FJ. This past July when I took my daughter out to Colorado on the back of the FJ my wife told her it would be easy for her to figure out how to take a few naps along the way. All of my kids were skeptical but she dozed off a couple of times, not for a long nap, maybe 5-10 min. at a time. After the first time she was amazed at how easy it was. A backrest helps a lot, as I'm sure that the arm rests available for the big touring bikes are also.

I didn't have arm rests but I had a sleeping bag on top of each hard bag which acted like an arm rest and gave some side to side support.

Another lesson to learn from this is to always practice your counter steering so when you need to make an emergency swerve it will be instinctive.

In 1986 I had a very drunk girl on the back of my FZ 750. She fell asleep/passed out several times. I have no idea how she did not fall off. I kept feeling the bike pull to one side, wake her up, and within a few minutes start pulling in the other direction. The things we thought were funny.
