i would not recommend using a HID inside the FJ stock headlamp.

the reflector is not designed to work with this type of bulb and you will not be happy with the results.

if you really wanna go HID then i suggest some driving lights converted to HID.

start out with a pair of these..... your choice as to style.

convert to HID with a set of these..... for H3 bulbs  (I recommend the 5000K bulbs for a more natural light)

Just wondering, if that is the case with the reflector I will go with a 55/100 and a relay, thats what I used to have on my old 85

Some have reported that going to a 100W bulb will melt the standard plastic plug on the back of the bulb.......I have attacked the problem by mounting lights similar to those suggested by Klavdy, but they are Narva rather than Hella.

The mounting plate is just a strip of 3mm aluminium plate, about an inch wide, bolted thru the bottom of the fairing (I drilled 2 holes in the OEM pre moulded "indents - for want of a better word" in the inside of the fairing - its a 91 model, not sure if these "indents" exist on earlier models) with large pieces of the same plate on the inside to act as washers/load spreaders. The plate is damped by some of that self adhesive foam rubber stuff squeezed between the strip and the underside of the fairing.
I did not however change to HIDs......just the standard 50W globes the lights came with.
They are wired via a relay and fuse direct to the battery and controlled by a tap into the high beam wire via a switch on the dash. They only come on if high beam is selected.....that's the only legal way to run driving lights over here.
They do not come anywhere near the front guard at full compression and full lock.......I checked that first b4 mounting them.
Its a bit agricultural, but does an excellent job.
Here is a pic.

Just my take on the poor night time visibility......
As an aside...... my mates 2009 Triumph Bonny has worse lights than the FJ.

FJZ1 1200 - It'll do me just fine.
Timing has much to do with the success of a rain dance.

I never had the melting problem and I had my last 85 for 6 years.

Maybe its the lucas wiring on the triumph :sarcastic:

as long as you run the low beam (55 watt) you wont have any melting problems but you go running that 100 watt on a relay and your headlight connector plug WILL melt ...... been there and done that ....twice!!!!!!

i now have a ceramic connector which will never melt.

i run my high beam during the daytime in order to increase my street presence to the cagers.

i also found the 90/100 bulbs didnt last for squat either. ... and that's many different brands tried.

could try a convert to dual rounds and newer light, but I don't care for the dual round look much, the fzr had that, let alone the newer bug/transformer bikes that everyone has

It is possible to use a HID lamp in the stock FJ housing.  They put out about as much heat as a standard 55w lamp and draw less current (after initial firing).  There are several people running HID lamps on their FJ with no ill effects.

Here is a H4/9003 replacement that has a shield around the arc lamp so you get the correct cut off of the beam pattern.  This also acts as a "high beam" by moving the shield so more light is thrown higher to simulate a the light pattern of what would be the "high beam" on a standard Halogen lamp.

I wouldn't try to power the ballast off the stock wiring loom.  It won't be able to draw enough current to initially fire the lamp.

Edit: The lamps you listed, would be bad to use as they would throw the light everywhere and blind on coming vehicles.

That looks nice, but there again we're at 150 for a headlight. I guess I will stick with halogen or try a cheap hid for kicks later
