Quote from: racerrad8 on July 06, 2024, 06:09:29 PMIf trying to lighten the rotating mass of the clutch, there are a couple of tricks we've seen over the years.

A few that had the drive gear trimmed/thinned down. Lightening holes in the basket, the clutch boss lightened and the pressure plate lightened.

I have never checked, but I would imagine the coil spring pressure plate is lighter than the stock Yamaha assembly.

Thanks randy. Do the barnett spring conversion allow for 8 large friction plates?

Anyone knows how to attach pictures?

General Discussion / Paint removal
Last post by xenotron - July 09, 2024, 11:16:50 AM
Hi getting my old FJ back after a long search I have found it in a very sorry state.  It looks like its been painted by Stevie Wonder after 10 cans of Special Brew. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way I would be able to move the rubbish respray without damaging the original paint underneath?
Cheers John

The Speed Hut that Pat speaks about are IMO the way to go. GPS speedometer that is super accurate, the matching tachometer and fuel meter use stepper motors for long life and accuracy.
They are not a simple plug and play item. I have built 6 complete 3 gauge sets for myself and a few other FJ owners.

The FZR trees use exactly the same pin (stem) as the FJ, so they fit straight in.

On the USD FZR front end swap, with (2001/2005) FZ1 risers and handlebars fitted, there's a little bit of work with a hand file (takes less than a minute) and to the lock stops, to fit the lot. The whole conversion from start to finish, involves no special tools, just a basic hand tools and a drill

FJankenstein,

Try a can of SeaFoam (mixed to label specs) to get and keep the carbs clean.  That stuff is magic, but not instant magic.  It will take a couple of tank-fills to use up one can of carb cleaner, when mixed correctly.  Add the cleaner to the gas tank before you pump in the fuel.

If the tach quits again, check that the tach and instrument panel have solid, unquestionable grounds connected, at the panel and the frame.  Dull metal is corroded metal.  You want bright, shiny connections, and solidly secured at each terminal.

2 months later and the carbs still clear and running great. Tach also still working. Now if I can just find that 6th gear that I can't stop looking for..

That's what happens, out comes the old mechanical speedo, in goes the new GPS speedo.

Pat and Red, thanks fr the info and link. If I get no joy in solving the problem with the existing equipment, I will look into the digital speedo.
Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, which drives myself nuts 🤪, so having a speedo in the instrument cluster, which does nothing, would annoy me too much. If one of the Speedhut gauges can replace the original in the existing cluster that might also be an option.
