Quote from: Motofun on November 18, 2025, 05:44:37 AMPat's old enough to remember when the FJ was one of the newest hotest things around.  We didn't complain (much) back then, just kookaloo'd the hell out them.  I bet Pat thinks his 1984 desk top computer was kinda clunky too.... :wacko2:

1985- I was due to graduate high school in 1 year and I had the Yamaha 1985 FJ lineup poster on my wall along with Heather Thomas in a Pink Bikini. Never really thought Id ever own an FJ yet here I am...

I was so hoping this was going to be a Heather Thomas story!

Which chainset should I buy because I have 3CX framenumber 1988. But with ABS   imported in 1992...strenge isn't?

That's not only strange, it's worrying- Yamaha didn't put ABS on any FJ anywhere until 1991.

Are you sure your FJ is both a 1988 and a 3CX model. It may have been modified by a previous owner, or it may be a matter later 3XW model (not sure why/how it would be registered as an 88).

Can you post some photos of the bike and the ABS equipment, it might help us get to the bottom of this conundrum.

I'm runnning 18T front and 40T rear and like it.

I suggest ordering quality sprockets and chain from RPM don't be tempted to save a few bucks with cheap China eBay stuff.

Quote from: Pat Conlon on November 07, 2025, 11:55:47 AMStill have those 42 year old rubber brake lines?

As Pat already mentioned, if the brake lines are original equipment and 42 years old, its probably time to upgrade them.

RPM has you covered with Spiegler braided brake hoses, for the front and rear brakes as well as the clutch line.

There are several options available.

Here is the front brake kit eliminating the anti dive fork feature lines: https://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=S-YA0131

We also offer the OE set to run the anti dive as well, just check out the website and search Spiegler.

We have you covered regarding chain and sprockets. You'll just need to decide which sprockets sizes you want to use.

Quote from: Pat Conlon on November 24, 2025, 12:49:42 AMGet a top of the line chain for your FJ...

I'm a fan of 530 DID ZVMX...other folks like the EK ZZZ chains. As long as the chain's tensile strength is at least 10k psi you should be good.

Go up one tooth on your countershaft sprocket, from oem 17 tooth to 18 tooth. It's easier on your chain and better gas mileage.
38 tooth to 40 tooth are the popular sizes for back sprockets. Get steel sprockets, not aluminum, aluminum back sprockets do not last on our FJ's.

Thanks for reporting back, mystery solved!

Cheers

Quote from: Pat Conlon on November 24, 2025, 12:57:13 AMABS was not possible in '88. The pump wouldn't fit. Different frame.
Only in the gen 4 frames ('91-95) did Yamaha offset the shock mounting needed to fit the abs pump.
Here's a list of FJ VIN's you can peruse:  https://fjowners.com/index.php?topic=13764.0

No chain difference between FJ's with ABS and non ABS FJ's
They all use a 110 link 530 chain. Get a top of the line chain for your FJ.

FJ's eat cheap chains and cheap chains beat the shit out of the engine cases when they fail.
Not if they fail......when they fail.

Speaking of which...
I wonder how MoPar Steve is doing?

Thxs so no changes in chains and sprockets. Top
