Title: Hi from southern Spain
Post by: Mick9264 on September 18, 2022, 12:39:29 PM
Hi, I finally got myself an fj1200 3cv after promising myself one 34 years ago. She's needed work but I'm nearly there. Shims done, carbs sorted and now running lovely. I started at the front and have gone through it changing oils etc. Sourced an original rear shock as the one on it was embarrassingly bad. Just a few more bits to source and she's on the road. I must sort the front brake out though, I'm missing a support pad and it sounds like a donkey when I apply it. Cheers Mick.

Mick,

Welcome from Utah, USA.  Pull up a seat, and relax among friends.
Some owners here may have things that you need.
Send a list, and maybe we can help.

Thanks everyone, I'm looking forward to riding the fj when its finished, it rode bloody awful when I got it, knackered chain, bad misfire, knackered shock which made it handle like a pram with three wheels but the basics were there so I took a chance. I'll be another couple of weeks working on it I think so until then I'll have to ride my Aprilia Tuono 1000r. ????

Welcome, that blue looks good in the photos. Easy to fix the issues you mention. Happy to have you join the FJ campfire.

The rear shock was an absolute joke and had no damping whatever!
This is the new one from a low mileage bike, the old one below is how I took it out. The linkage went straight in the bin!

The Yamaha FJ shocks were weak the day they left Iwata, Japan.
They are not serviceable or rebuildable. They are shit.
Much better alternatives are available from Hagon, YSS, Penske, Ohlins and RPM.
There's a reason that heavier fork springs and a aftermarket shock are first mod's recommended on our FJ's.

A new shock will be the most expensive part you will buy for your FJ, but well worth it.

Yeah,so I've heard but I'm not going to rag the bike about, especially with the choice of tyres available. I have an Aprilia Tuono 1000r with full ohlins for that, thanks for the input though.
