Title: ***CANCELLED**** 2020 West Coast Rally, Bucks Lake, Ca - May 28-31
Post by: racerrad8 on February 07, 2020, 11:46:06 AM
Here is the official 2020 WCR thread. This is where the remaining information will be completed for the 2020 WCR. There was a recent vote on the location and Buck's Lake Lodge (http://www.buckslakecabinrentals.com/) in northern California was the winner.

Travis (T Legg) (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?action=profile;u=5832) will be the point of contact of the event.

Here is some of the information posted by Travis in other threads regarding Buck's Lake and I'm sure much will be coming soon.

I spoke with Rebecca at Bucks Lake Lodge today and told her our plans. She is happy to have us and has at this point set aside the entire facility for us untill we decide who wants to go and what rooms or cabins they want to rent. The prices I quoted earlier are still current. She says so far this year the snow has been relatively light and expects a nice spring this year.   My son Ian and I plan on attending. We need to formalize the decision and make a list of attendees. After we have a firm decision and a list I can coordinate with her.

Bucks lake lodge has a seventeen room motel with large rooms that have either one or two beds. The one bed rooms are $ 107.91 including the 9% room tax . The rooms with two beds are $ 118.81 with room tax. They also have three sizes of cabins all of which have bathrooms and kitchens. The small cabins have either a double bed or two twin beds in one bedroom. their rates with room tax are $ 158.05 per night if rented two days or less or $ 129.81 per night if rented for three days or more. The four person cabins have two bedrooms with a double bed in each room. The cost with tax is $179.85 per night for two days or less or $ 151.51 if rented three days or more. The eight person cabin has three bedrooms with double beds and two twin beds. The rate for this cabin with tax is $212.55 per night for two days or less or $ 184.31 per night for three or more nights. There are tent and RV camping sites nearby also. There are several restaurants at the lodge and nearby. They have a web site at buckslakecabinrentals.com

So as mentioned above, this is also the starting list of the attendees from the 2020 WCR. Please add your name to the list as we go forward so Travis has the most accurate information.

I just spoke to a friend who lives near Bucks Lake and currently there is no snow on the ground. Winter could return but at this point it looks like conditions should be nice. All the people who have confirmed so far would fit in the large cabin.I hope people state their intentions soon so we don't tie up their facility waiting. also I need to know everyone's choice of room or cabin. I know Rick wants a cabin with the double bed and Ian and I want a cabin with two twin beds. I don't want to discourage late deciders, most likely there will be vacancies up to the last minute but I need to get back to them soon with a list.

Looking at the map, it appears the Timberline Inn is located a distance away from the cabins....
Is this the case?

Where is the fire pit located?

Hi Pat. There is a walking path through the forest between the two .The path may be a little long for city folk but I think I have to walk farther to take my garbage out to the road. Fires are allowed at the cabins and the Timberline Inn. I booked a cabin from Rebecca today but I found out after that they have switched the twin bed cabins to one double each. There are five cabins with double beds now,one cabin with two bedrooms with a double bed each and one cabin with three bedrooms each with a double bed plus a twin bed floating around some where. And the timber line has rooms with one double and rooms with two beds. We should start calling individually and reserve our rooms or cabins. Rebecca did warn me that if somehow the winter returned and dropped copious amounts of snow it could affect their preparations of the cabins. She thought this would be very unlikely this year but if it does happen we could all be accommodated at the Timberline inn. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for a warm dry month of May.Rebecca can be reached to book your rooms at 1-530-283-2262

I  hope I don't jinx it but the weather has been very warm lately its been in the fifty's and sixty's the last couple weeks and will be as far as the forecast shows. I have been over all the passes to Lake Tahoe many times this year. where at this time last year ten to twelve feet of snow stood, this year there might be three feet. I plan to ride out to Bucks Lake next weekend and I will post some pictures.

Ian and I took a ride to Bucks lake on Friday. A friend of Ian's with a big 1600cc BMW invited him for a ride out to Portola with a couple of Harleys. That is halfway to Bucks lake from Reno so we thought a slow ride halfway out would be ok then we would go on our seperate way to Bucks lake. We pulled up to the meeting place and there was a group of riders that included a Kawasaki H-2R, a ZX14R,a Hyabusa, a Yamaha R-1,andR-6, a GSXR 1000, a ZX10R,Ian's ZZR1200,my FJ1100 the BMW and two fat Harleys. The route was discussed and the first stop point was chosen as Chilcoot California. It was hilarious the Two Harleys pulled out first while everyone else was still putting on helmets and gloves. The entire first leg of the ride there was this tightly packed group of superbikes riding in formation behind two ambling Harleys doing 65-70 mph for forty five miles. No one broke rank but at the first stop I've never seen more frustrated faces . I overheard a kid in his thirty's telling another rider " I never thought we would do the speed limit the whole way". Thank God a decision was made by the group to head south down to Downieville instead of continuing on to Portola freeing me and Ian to ride on by ourselves. Nobody waited for the Harleys this time there were bikes blasting out of the parking lot as fast as they could get out.

Unchained from the group the next fifty miles to Quincy were beautiful and quick. Before we new it we were 17  miles from Bucks lake having lunch at a great Mexican/American restaurant called Paradise Grill in Quincy. After lunch we headed up Bucks Lake road. The next ten miles were nice twisty road through beautiful meadows past pastures, 100 year old barns and ranches with a few cabins and small resorts. Unfortunately the use of pea gravel for snow control and all the logging and dirt ranch roads required cautious riding. After passing through Meadow valley about six mile from the lake we began to see patchy snow beside the road. It was only about 8" to a foot deep in the deepest spots. The snow was soft heavily melted remnants of the winter snowpack. Four scenic miles later we reached the summit only two miles from our goal. The summit is where they stop plowing snow. A sign says no wheeled vehicles beyond this point. The summit is a widened section with dozens of parking spaces with snow grooming equipment, snow mobiles and several Jeeps with the wheels replaced by caterpillar tracks. Apparently Bucks lake road beyond this point is maintained as a winter recreation road for the season and they haven't given up on winter quite yet and plowed it. If only we had brought our chains we could have made it the rest of the way.

We went down almost back to Meadow valley where Big Creek road splits off that  parallels Bucks lake road and rejoins it by the lake but it is also not maintained. It had some debris and obstacles but we were once again stopped by snow. If they plowed the foot of snow on the road we could have easily made it. We are going to ride again next month. The weather on the ride was fantastic. It was in the mid fifty's. It is incredibly beautiful there large trees nice rock formations creeks and of course the lake. I can't wait for the rally.

Well I got a call from Rebecca at Bucks lodge tonight. I'm a little disappointed she didn't give us a warning first but they have booked the remaining rooms at the Timberline inn. At this point as far as I know the only rooms we have booked are a double bed room for Mark and Mike and I have the eight person cabin that has three bedrooms with double beds and two twin beds.Ian and I can use the two twin beds the bedrooms with the double beds can be used by any couples (Rick and wife,Steve Mopar man and wife)that leaves Pat ,Paul and Andy to fit in one double bed(no forking allowed). I have no problem with having sleeping bags on the floor of the cabin to accomodate anybody who needs a place to stay. I will be bringing my sleeping bag and mat so if someone has difficulty sleeping on the floor they can have my twin bed.It could be a bit cozy but the cost of the cabin split nine ways would be less than twenty bucks a day. She said she has an rv that could be rented as well. She also said she could change Mark and Mike to a small cabin for the same price as the room they booked.I'm sorry we didn't get a warning first. Any way it is time to make final plans to have this work.If any one was planning an extended stay past Sunday I will see if they can keep the cabin longer.

Sorry Pat I got it wrong when I talked to her last night. The reservation you made for a Timberline room with two beds is still good  and so is the one that Mike and Mark made. She is going to call you and Mike and offer to exchange your rooms for four person cabins that have two double beds in each cabin for the same price as the rooms you reserved. So we will have two cabins with two beds each and the eight person cabin with three bedrooms with double beds and two twin beds. So it looks like everybody will have their own bed. I am still willing to fit anyone who wants to come into the eight room cabin and she is trying to get one more small cabin with one double bed ready for us.

All the beds come with bedding. Each cabin has a bathroom with shower and towels.   kitchens have basic utensils frying pan sauce pan and coffee pot. Each cabin has a fire pit and they sell firewood. Depending on the level of societal panic there may be a BYOTP policy in place. If Pat wants to keep his room at the Timberline Inn he can but it would be nice to all be togethor.

been looking at routes -- just passing on info -- for all to consider.    Check out Tobin Ridge Road -- I believe it to be Adventure bike only but man it looks good for getting up the hill and down --- almost perfect as it starts and ends on the same road just a nice little detour ---

I am not suggesting it as a detour but it does look like a cool road for the ADV.

3.5 hours 142 miles

I will be on the Timberline Inn -- I have been trying to book but haven't got a hold of anyone yet.  Its a short walk through the forest which will be fine for the get- togethers.

South Route using major Hwys like 49 and 70   5hrs 16 mins.    This route might be somewhat historic due to the 49 hwy and Nevada City -- Gold Rush stuff

As far as I know all the rooms in the Timberline have been booked. We have a bedroom with a double bed in it at the eight person cabin that you and your wife are welcome to use and they may get one more cabin with a double bed in it ready in time for the rally.

TLegg -- the cabin 8 person you mentioned -- is the double bed in a separate room or is this all in one big room _-- I am a heavy snoring person --re I sleep like a log so the more isolation the better.    Let me know if you do know the layout of the place.

PAT -- or Mike/Mark --- if you guys do want or elect to shift to a cabin -- check with me first before giving up the room -- I will gladly pay for the cabin if more expensive -- whatever works -- I did initially want to stay at the timberline for multiple reasons one being there is more there for Kris when I am out riding.

I also plan on bringing the waverunner and going up early to do Oroville Lake a few days and maybe some more lakes along the way so we may also just elect to stay in Oroville for part of the time prior to the Rally.

Steve, they all look like they have the right amount of wiggle

for the previous maps I did I just realized you can't click and make them larger to view --- you have to right click and then go to " open image under a new tab  "  then go to that tab  --  and then you can see the route better

UPDATE  --- I have booked a room close to the Lake at Haskins B&B.   so you all can ignore the above.    I will still be there for the fires and general hangout.   No further action needed.   TLEGG thanks for the offer -- much appreciated.

It's crazy since Ian and I took our ride up to Buck's Lake they have received 65" of snow and maybe another foot to come in the next three days. There are warm sixty degree days following this next storm. I'm pretty sure the snow will melt in time I'm not so sure the quarantine will end. I left Rebecca a message that if is legal I will be there.

Hi All,

I am planning towards and have every intention of attending the rally, and will of course place a deposit if/when useful.
My two options are to either drive in with my truck camper towing the FJ and sleep in the camper, or rent a room/cabin. I gladly pay extra for any of those options.
We are two months away so anything can happen, but I am really looking forward to see everybody again and do some riding.

FJORD,

If you can't find a room there will be room in the eight person cabin. Right now there will be Me and Ian. Rick and his wife are welcome to a bedroom with double bed and if Andy needs a place he can fit in also.

Well, something good might have come out of this ongoing mess.

The out of town training that was preventing me from attending has been scheduled.

But, I am concerned after catching up on the thread. Am I wrong that there are no more rooms available at Bucks Lake?

While I appreciate that Travis might have room, my wife will not be comfortable with it.

I see Steve found a place away at Haskins. How far is that from everyone else?

I'll start doing some research today, but on that note are we sure it is still happening?

Is Buck's Lake going to allow us to be there if the state is still under lockdown or some sort of modified/restricted congregation rules.

I don't want to waste my time of it is not happening in 2020. Maybe its time for a new date...

Rebecca from Bucks lake lodge called me a week ago. Right now they are only allowed to rent to essential workers. At the time she called a group of workers wanted to rent the Timberline rooms and she said she would have to do it to keep her business afloat. I called her two days ago and she said that deal fell through and she has no bookings .I think that includes the group that was going to rent all the rooms in the Timberline that she moved us to the cabins for. I think once again the whole facility is available. I told her I was going to check with the group to see how many still want to come and if we are willing to do a later date if the quarantine is still on. I think I can get the first right of refusal if we are all still interested. I am.

So, we are at the mercy of the restrictions with no end in sight.

Are you planning a drop dead date of calling it, like May 1st?

I'm going to hold off at the moment until we have a clearer direction.

Thanks, Randy - RPM

I think May 1st is a practical cut off date. At that time we could decide when and if we want to reschedule it to a later date. I will Call Rebecca tommarrow and see if she can still get it ready by May 28th and if she would take a tentative booking for a later date if we have to. If the quarantine isn't lifted by then I will do a day trip there from Reno with a picnic lunch. I'll bring disposable gloves so I don't have to contaminate someone's gas pump.

We should make a new list.

This is rough. Just because I want to have the option to make new plans. I'm likely to cancel my reservation May 1. Sounds like they already cancelled me? I cant commit to another date (maybe place) until I know what that is. I definitely hope to go. I think calling it off May 1 is a bummer but probably logical. Then work on something the other side of this... Fall Rally

I wouldn't have a problem waiting an extra week or two to decide If everyone is ok with it. I mainly would like to see how many would still attend before I talk to her again. Now that her deal with the crew of essential workers has fallen through I think she would honor our reservations if the quarantine is lifted. The other list is just to express interest in doing it on a later date. The weather starts getting cold again much later than August.

May 1st is this Friday and it doesn't look like California is rushing to reopen. I spoke with Rebecca at Bucks lake lodge. She said if the quarantine is lifted we can use her cabins. She would also reschedule for a later date. The new attendee list is short. I don't think it would be a true west coast rally with only four bikes but if it opens I will go if it's only two bikes and if it doesn't reopen I am still going to do a day trip Friday or Saturday.

Travis, I really appreciate your efforts to make this happen. It is not a minor thing. You should feel good about it. The circumstances were to say the least, out of your control. I hope to be passing through your neck of the woods this year maybe late spring or early summer to see my son and in Boise. Maybe we can grab a bite or if I make a "ride" out of it do a  little something on the bikes.

THANK YOU!
Mike

Next time I'm in Carson City (this summer) I'll give you a call and buy you lunch at Red 74's, then we can ride up the mountain.

.       Thanks Mike. Its a shame about the rally but I'm glad nobody in this group has gotten sick. Hopefully we will all get together at the RPM fall rally. All you have to do is make it to Reno with your riding gear and I will have an extra FJ to ride.

Travis, you can join the rarest club on Earth; 'the rally organizers whose rally got canceled-due to unfortunate circumstances', club. (It's a working title).
That means you join me in the club, your efforts dusted by a virus, mine were scuppered by wild fires.
Top marks.

You and I gotta ride over the mountain to Oakdale and get Ryan Raduechel's help on welding that frame crack.

Ryan's welds are exquisite.

Well May 28th isn't going to work for this year's rally but it seems like pressure to reopen our economy is growing.I think by August there is a good chance California will be open again. If others want to reschedule it for August I think we could. Bucks Lake is even a better place to ride mid summer than it is in the spring. If any one is interested I will reschedule it with them but we should decide now before some one else books the facility.I will restart the list.

Due to the unfortunate circumstances of the corona virus, the decision to cancel this year's WCR has been made.

The RPM Fall Rally is still on the books and I will start planning it over the next month. I should have the specifics following the RPM Memorial Sales event.

For further information, all info will be posted in RPM Fall Rally section: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=19129.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=19129.0)
