I forgot to mention the end cans arr being replaced with shorty reverse cone megaphone cans. The neta one has a rust hole and they look to have been welded badly a few times.

I pink stripe "93"?!
Unusual, as that color scheme would have been a 1991 model in the USA.

Welcome, you seem very pleased with you FJ, keep it up!

oooooooo low blow lol and actually it has got a tiny bit of red on it the paint on the luggage rack as started to peel and the primer coat that has been used is red oxide haha.

on another note ive added another two jobs to my list of mods im going to do:

HID conversion on the headlight. ive done it on a few bikes now works really well.
The led tail light conversion that cuts the extra material from the tail light that hangs down below fairing (as seen on here but cant remember who     did it.
Demon eye conversion not angel because thats a bit too saintly for me. Done by myself as seen below.
Custom bar conversion plate im going to design and have a local firm machine up for me.

the last mod could take a while because its very low on the priority list as it has the stock bars for now.
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20130504_203500_zpscd08ed14.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20130504_203500_zpscd08ed14.jpg.html)

so there you go a small update going to start snapping pictures of the tear down soon as i realised i got so into it i wasnt taking pictures.

again i want to say thanks for all the kind words. if my helga comes out anything like the level of craftsmanship ive seen on here ill be very happy

even the resale red one lol   :drinks: :good:  :blum2:

warm regards

Post by: MLdesigns on August 07, 2013, 02:53:50 AM
thanks George

yeah shes a nice colour but the pictures dont really show how tatty she is. Theres a massive dent on the left side of the tank right along the line where your knee tucks in and the bits of plastic is showing through the paint so shes getting new paint.

nano black pearl for the body work plastics
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/nanoblack_zps72e65c68.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/nanoblack_zps72e65c68.jpg.html)

and ktm orange or ral2009 for details and wheels grab rails crash bars
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/RAL2009_zps142bb44d.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/RAL2009_zps142bb44d.jpg.html)

i plan to redo the fj graphics in that orange and matt black with a twist.

as for clocks my plan is to try and mod the clock surround so that it retains the flow from the rest of the plastic infills.

i want to fit two of these in:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/35screen_zps933d9b78.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/35screen_zps933d9b78.jpg.html)

and the clock

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/digitalclocks_zpsf883ce71.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/digitalclocks_zpsf883ce71.jpg.html)

the screens are for these:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/rearviewcams_zps884ede0b.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/rearviewcams_zps884ede0b.jpg.html)

the other thing im going to do will be the smoked front indicator lenses you can buy with orange bulbs so they blend with the lines of the bike more.

any thoughts and suggestions are always welcome

and as always

             warm regards and much love
                                                   Mike and Helga

ok so a small update.

ive slowly started to tear her down and its not a pretty site. If you are offeneded by a very dirty fj you should look away now:

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20130826_200532_zpsa02e5d75.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20130826_200532_zpsa02e5d75.jpg.html)

HAHAHA had u there lol.

thats start of the strip down heres some shots of the worst bits. after a clean with engine degreaser.

and this is the rear master cylinder after a quick scrub with a brass brush. before it was so bad it was just covered in white powder.....

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20130826_200355_zpsb50ed45b.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20130826_200355_zpsb50ed45b.jpg.html)

as you can see its a state and before it comes completely apart it all needs a good clean. the foot peg plates have been given a good scrub and are going in the dish washer as i right this post.

on the last bit of news the stock neta cans are dead so i pulled them off and at a local bike show today i scored a set of old supertraps ill fit to her. photos when i go and pick em up next weekend  :D

warm regards as always

ok so just a small update at 2 am this morning i decided i wanted to switch to dirt bar as i prefer the wider grip and i have a set of trials bars which are wider.

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20130828_080916_zps5be1e1b1.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20130828_080916_zps5be1e1b1.jpg.html)

i dont even need to lengthen the throttle cables just re route them the otherside of the steering neck

i also have cleaned the foot peg hanger plates. so taking them to see how much they would cost to polish before i get them powder coated.

Why would you consider powder coating aluminum when you can easily polish them yourself?

Save your money.
You have your hands full. You have plenty of other more important things to spend your money on.

If you get just a small nick in that powder coat, corrosion on the aluminum will spread under the powder coat and blow the paint off (or clear coat)

Hey pat thanks for your input.  The main reason is I have a great distain for polish and chrome. Since im going to have wheels etc done anyway the price wony be too bad. Thr other thing id that I wanted to do it differently to other people, not because my ways better but because I like to be different.

While im on here I may as well update everyone.....

Well as you have seen from some pictures I got my bars mounted and got my switch gear all cleaned up. Next up is once ive got my exhaust all worked out and tacked up I can pull the system off and prepare that for wrapping. While thats going on im going to have the engine soda blasted and carbs soda blasted and ultra sonicly cleaned. Then balanced. Going to keep engine mods relativly stock for now as I want to ride it first.

Once the rear tyre reaches its wear point ill do the gsxr conversion and the cbr f4i shock mod along with trying to source a lighter swingarm tgat can be braced......

           warm regards mike and helga

Mike, along with the frame and wheels, are going with the KTM orange on the side plates?

So you are going with HD colors? Black and orange?
That bike will blend right in with the others at bike night.

Pat you tried buddy, but bling just must not appeal to some.
(Makes us just that more unique)!

I initially thought so, but that turned out not to be true. I keep my bike in the garage and I live in the dry desert and I don't ride that much in the rain.

A quick wipe down with Simichrome and all is well. It is really no big deal, really.

However,  If I lived at the coast, I would think twice with the raw aluminum and the salt air.

Yes it will be similar colours to a HD but it will be faster, cooler and much more reliable. Plus the blaxk isnt plan black it pearl. It will stand out because its going to be running straight through pipes from collector backwards. I think I may need to rejet it.

Pat the frame will be black buddy but galavnised first. The orange will be more for accent than out right flash. The other reason no shine is because I live in the uk and will be riding this in every weather we hav has anyone on here ran straight throughs or cherry bombs?   ill get some more progress done towards end of the month until then ive got a vfr 400 streetfighter im building for a mate.

As allways warm regards and respect

Ok so firtsly sorry for the delay in any updates.

progress has been very slow mainly due to tight fund and other projects on the go but i have a tiny bit of progress for you all

first things first ive worked out that i can fit both screens and the monitors for my camera setup inside the clock surround JUST! so i made a car mockup to check....

i wanted to get my seat recovered in my own design. after waiting a long time for a friends brother who is a custom seat guy to get in touch i was talking to my mother about the bike and asked her if she could do it and she told me not a problem........(my mums was a seamstress for years and a dab hand at fabric work. so free seat recovering and shes going to do it for my xmas pressie so custom seat for free.

also decided ill make my own exhaust just couldnt find one on the shelf that i wanted or could afford so heres some pics of that in progress and a small video clip......

and a video for you all.....

also started toying with my own version of the fj logo. not the one ill be using i think it looks to warner brothers but its an idea at least
[URL=http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/DSC_0055_zps50d5bdb2.jpg.html](http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/DSC_0055_zps50d5bdb2.jpg) (http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/fjcustompipesnobaffle_zpse17321e5.mp4)

and last but not least i pulled the tank to inspect the condition under there and its not good...

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/DSC_0043_zps523486a5.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/DSC_0043_zps523486a5.jpg.html)

progress will start to speed up soon as in the last 3 weeks ive spent £150 British rebuilding the engine on my ns 125 cafe i built so i can put it up for sale to pay for my full test..

i hope all is well in the land of fj goodness

until next update keep riding and enjoying these amazing machines

i bet randy could clean them up a treat but i live in the uk and luckily i have a guy who's going to soda blast and ultra sonic clean them for free..
he's also going to soda blast the engine for me which is costing me 80 pounds once iv'e got the cash and the engine out ill be getting that sort

George i think it was more likely  the po thought it would be a good idea to ride it through a salt mine every day for a year . so much corrosion there....

the good thing is that it runs like a dream although my new pipes will need baffling because of back pressure and noise.

until next post

                                  warm regards Mike and Helga

ok so ive not posted for a little while because ive had a lot going on with work, home and other projects plus the project was in limbo for a while because it was that bad i considered keeping it for parts........ Months passed i did my bike test and i needed a ride....
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20140822_183827_zpsbubmoouv.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20140822_183827_zpsbubmoouv.jpg.html)
for the grand sum of £460 42,000 miles on the clock and still had original paint im a very happy bunny all it needed was a carb rebuild and it needs the valve shims doing.
it now needs a rear tyre but im getting a new set of boots and set of red wheels with new bearings for £100 after crimbo. the luggage came from Helga as now i had a touring machine i could set about making the 91 into more of a solo weapon. so with that out the way the update BEGINS!

So first of all now i had the 3cv as a daily rider for me and my wife it meant that Helga really didnt need to be twin seat anymore. but i wanted it to look fj still with the kookaloo hump.
my proposed shortening:

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141003_170536_zpsrlhxctde.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141003_170536_zpsrlhxctde.jpg.html)
not exact at this point because i needed the tank on to work out my seat space. so i raised the rake up to set the angles i want:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190050_zpsqshancmq.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190050_zpsqshancmq.jpg.html)
i will actually be plated in to extend the mounts. so then i set the length with the tank on:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190101_zpsxpfjm1al.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190101_zpsxpfjm1al.jpg.html)
the pic isnt exactly spot on because ive already chopped the rails at this point but didnt take a picture before hand
this is how much i removed from the tail:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190604_zpskmqly11e.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190604_zpskmqly11e.jpg.html)
As you can see i chopped a fair chunk out of the subframe.
to re attach the rear section of the frame i used some thick wall tube and shaved the diameter down slightly. i drilled a hole in each peice of subframe for a plug weld and then hammered the tube inside the subframe rails to re attach leaving a gap for a seam weld. this way the stress is spread instead of just being on a but welded joint. then i hamerred the end section onto the tubes this allowed me to square it all up before welding then when i do the plug welds the heat from the seam weld wont move anything about. You can see the joint in the picture below:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190532_zps9wlmegbz.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190532_zps9wlmegbz.jpg.html)
i still need to make the lower bars up yet and until i can borrow my mates mig welder it wont have any lower rails, mainly so i have access to weld the upper tube fully.

OTHER THINGS IV'E BEEN WORKING ON:
So i want to run the exhaust under the seat but that makes the stock tailight an issue so i decided to make my own.
The brake light:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141016_193624_zpsdolticg9.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141016_193624_zpsdolticg9.jpg.html)
so i masked out the end of the tail found my center and made evenly spaced lines. theres actually a moulding mark on the inside to use a reference for the center.
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141016_211402_zpsgv5lavia.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141016_211402_zpsgv5lavia.jpg.html)
then i drilled some holes and using chrome bezel led holders that a mate on the uk fj facebook page sent me. the leds in them where rubbish but i had some 50,000 mcd units:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141016_211209_zpspv8fwiab.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141016_211209_zpspv8fwiab.jpg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141016_211229_zpsksspanwn.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141016_211229_zpsksspanwn.jpg.html)

there not wired up yet just twisted together for testing and they will need resistors because they are so bright u cant look at them head on. although a trail of crashed cars in my wake would have advantages .
then it was time for my running light:
i had already bought a billet alu led strip to use as the brake light but it wasnt bright enough so i saved it to use as the running light:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20140729_192644_zpscrbzfkec.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20140729_192644_zpscrbzfkec.jpg.html)
I wanted it to follow the curves of the tail but it was flat so i risked it and tried to bend it  by hand, to my suprise i could. I tested it and it still worked but i didnt want to just stick it on like an after thought so i frenched it in:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141113_002939_zpstta8embm.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141113_002939_zpstta8embm.jpg.html)
its not perfect yet but its on and it works well:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141113_004233_RichtoneHDR_zpss30sox9n.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141113_004233_RichtoneHDR_zpss30sox9n.jpg.html)
the picture makes it look brighter than it is but its bright enough.

THE SIDE PANELS:
Ok so i had to shorten the side panels by a fair bit to fit and they dont look spot on but i have a cunning plan:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190000_zpsjzr0g3lf.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190000_zpsjzr0g3lf.jpg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141005_190035_zpstmphplcr.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141005_190035_zpstmphplcr.jpg.html)

im going to make a fiberglass mould from them and then im going to remake them in orange carbon kevlar and make them bolt on with dzeus fixings.
iv'e also shortened the seat pan and  i have new foam ready to go once the pan is solid enough.

other jobs ive started include i decided to mod the tank for bigger capacity and im running the fairing infill hot air ducts through the tank so the hot air comes out near the rider:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20141027_194627_zpscm364r00.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20141027_194627_zpscm364r00.jpg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/received_930153073678670_zpsviyvb4kn.jpeg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/received_930153073678670_zpsviyvb4kn.jpeg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/received_930166920343952_zpschnjppzn.jpeg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/received_930166920343952_zpschnjppzn.jpeg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/received_930173980343246_zpsxccso7rj.jpeg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/received_930173980343246_zpsxccso7rj.jpeg.html)
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/received_930174150343229_zpsoadgazbf.jpeg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/received_930174150343229_zpsoadgazbf.jpeg.html)
thats a work in progress.

ive also worked out how to get a single sided arm that bolts straight in ........................... BUILD ONE im going to use the front section from an fj arm and the rear section for a vfr 800 hub make a jig and then join the dots with alu tubing that the firm across from my work will tig weld for me:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/received_935239083170069_zpsw9jzxvcp.jpeg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/received_935239083170069_zpsw9jzxvcp.jpeg.html)

the other reason ive been off task is because ive been building this for my mate:
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/th_VID-20140712-WA0000_zpsfnaekyos.mp4) (http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/VID-20140712-WA0000_zpsfnaekyos.mp4)

so there you have it the update so far. im looking at fireblade forks and wheel etc upfront i dont know if thats been done or not but i should be able to get the whole lot from a mate for a good price. any questions or abuse feel free im thick skinned

oh i forgot to mention its having a one off dash and its getting a turbo along with lots of engine love.

So its been a long time since ive posted and alot of that is due to changes in life. Firstly i got a new job in january im now an apprentice tech for harley davidson.
This means my hours at work have increased so free times decreased.

secondly rusty helga became more than just a little rusty. I took the swingarm off and it looked like a shotgun had been taken to it. So there i was with an fj that would more than likley hit  the road again.

So i bought a new one. It was stunning its a 3cv in white red an silver and had low millege so i rode that from october until the 4th of feb this year when a cager cut me up at 30mph and knocked me and my girl into the central reservation.

The insurance wrote it off on a cat D which in the uk means un economical repair so i can put her back on the road so thats what in doing but new and different. Pics to follow tomorrow when im on the pc.

ok so as i said i will be posting some pics so here goes.

as i meantioned helga was doomed she had been layed waste by the dreaded tin worm my plans to make her epic were in tatters.

so...... i bought another fj. i knew from that one ride 3 streets away from the house i had to have one i was in love.

so i got a fj1200 1989 in white silver and red.
i paid 480 british pounds for it as it was listed as a non runner with all problems pointing to the carbs..........
well i went to pick it up and the guy had just re charged the battery he put the key in and pressed the start button and guess what
IT FIRED INTO LIFE the guys face dropped because he had been trying for about a month.
we picked it up in the work van which had a tail lift we put it on the tail lift and with me and the boss on the lift it wouldnt go up!
we had a load of matteress in the back (i used to work for a second hand furniture charity)
we rapped my baby in mats and strapped her to the side of the van and took the 4 hour drive home.

so after some fetling with the carbs it was runing like a champ but the shock was toast and the cans sounded terrible netas.
i changed the cans for some vtr 1000 cans that i re worked to fit and they sounded amazing.
next i recovered the seat which wasnt the best job and fitted blue spots.
then i changed the wheels for a red set that i got from a good friend with good avons with loads of meat on them for 100 pounds.
i changed the sprockets and chain for the d.i.d xring gold kit i had and fitted my luggage.

she stayed like this until i was knocked off in feburary this year. heres some pics and video.

the next video is after i was knocked off so if u dont wannt to see a very sorry fj dont look guys.

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/th_20150204_200936_zpsqvg9nc0h.mp4) (http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20150204_200936_zpsqvg9nc0h.mp4)

so i was faced with a problem i needed a bike but my fj was gone being examined for the insuarnce to try and work out if she was saveable.so in the mean time i bought a suzuki bandit mk1 1200 which had been fettled a bit by my best mate started to ride that.

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20150507_124236_zps7wu7pqdk.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20150507_124236_zps7wu7pqdk.jpg.html)
thats my youngest daughter on the bike shes my little mascott she loves the bikes.
the bike is far from stock and is a work in progress...............HERES THE THING  its not my fj i love the bandit for what it is but its not the powerhouse of an engine like the fj was....

so the claim went through i got paid out 1,580 for then bike and then they gave me back the fj they cat D it because it was un economical repair.  :yahoo:
:yahoo: so i couldnt justify keeping it becase of the work to fix it and cost involved.... i was about to start breaking it when it dawned on me i will bring her back to life using helga as the engine donner. so now the builds back on.

so heres where im now at with helga mk2 aka fj1200x

id shortened down the tail so it would be a solo seat bike.......

(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20150513_001216_zpspun2sdqr.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20150513_001216_zpspun2sdqr.jpg.html)

i orginally tried to modify the side panels so it looked stock but sorter but i didnt like it so i started to trelis the subframe.
also because the subframe was from a 3xw and mk2 is a 3cv i had to re weld the tank mount because once ide stretched the mounts out to fit the non rummber mount frame the tank wouldnt bolt down.
i then mocked the 3xw fairing onto the 3cv
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l544/Mike_Lara/20150509_213507_zpsgam009nj.jpg) (http://s1123.photobucket.com/user/Mike_Lara/media/20150509_213507_zpsgam009nj.jpg.html)

it looked good but dated and then i got offered some new lights from a cbr600 f4i which i orginally turned down. the more it ticked in my head the more i wanted to do it so i did.....

it has been given new suspension aswell i have a thunderace front end for it and at the rear i have a hyabusa swingarm and gsxr 750 rear wheel.

theres still loads to do and i have a picture of it in the sun to pst once i upload it but thats another day.

goodnight and i hope this hasnt been too wordy.

oh and the tank on the bike in the pics is my turbo tank so for now thats going on the shelf as she will be naturally asperated for at least a year.

enjoy and ride safe.....
