Title: FJ Airbox
Post by: CanDman on July 24, 2013, 04:42:06 PM
My CanD is finally coming home.....god I have missed her.........anyway.........GB Performance has done the porting and polishing.....valves....and.....well....basically....the bottom end !!! I am also installing and a brand new set of mikuni RS 40 D-12-K  racing carbs. I am getting opinions on what type of jetting should be done as well as air filtering. One school is of the opinion that K&N  individual air filters is the way to go...and the  other is to use the OEM airbox and drill a series of holes into it....... Any thoughts on the matter ?

Damned if I'd go and put K&Ns on there, after all the time and money spent...

If it were mine (airbox or not) it'd have Uni filters    :pardon:

Hey Ran.......nice to see you brother  :empathy2:.......thx for the suge.....I know Paul in Napanee uses individual air filters on at least one of his FJ's......and I am hearing that the stock airbox has a harmonic resonating sensor that works with the carbs....it sounded pretty high tech....does that sound right?

There is NO kind of sensor in the FJ airbox, of ANY year.... Get UNI filters (don't know if the pods Randy sells will fit the bells or not) that fit the carb bells. 40mm sounds kinda big, you'll probably have rideability issues with those monsters.....

I don't know the carb bell size either, but I can determine if they will fit once I find out the size of the bell.

We have individual UNI filters on Flynt's bike that I supplied once I knew the bell size.

Kevin, I need the bell size and the carb spacing to determine if pods can be found to fit or if individual pods are the way to go.

I wouldn't even spend the time thinking about keeping the air box on an FJ - especially not with aftermarket carbs. The FJ air box is still an "old school" air box - isn't large enough nor tuned for the resonance like later model air boxes (FZR, R1, FJR, etc). I think there are some benifits to low speed with the stock CV carbs, but nothing that can't be tuned around rather easily. You'll be in and out of the carbs enough times anyway getting them tuned that the air oz would be a royal pain to work with for no gain (and a probable loss) for keeping it

Skip the airbox, and put UNI's on it.

As for jetting, save yourself a truckload of energy, and just take it to a decent dyno.

The DYNO is exactly where she will be going next week.......my engine guy is setting it up in a way that minimizes cost and time in the dyno shop and he is asking me which set up I prefer......the air box...with holes drilled .......or individual filters......so I posted this to hear what opinions everyone had....thanks for the replies.......

+1 for pods. It's cool to be able to shake hands thru your bike.

+1 for no airbox. A side benefit of no airbox is the room you get, so many things you can put in there.
