:hi: I was having a chat with Paul from Napanee (a.k.a. paulfj03) the other day and the subject of an FJ clinic/preventative maintenance day came up. We both agreed that this would be a positive step for any FJ rider to attend, regardless of how good you may (or not) be with wrenching :praising: The basic idea is to help each other get and keep these old girls on the road and running at peek performance, as cheaply as possible in regards to using a dealer/independent shop :good2:
The provisional date is Saturday 24th August from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m...('ish) at my place in Erin Ontario...just north of Belfountain and the Forks of the Credit River Road :good:
Paul will supply some of the FJ specific tools for valve adjustment, etc...I'll supply the garage, bike ramp, tools, etc...plus coffee, tea, pop, water, (sorry, but NO alcohol for riders!!!).
It will obviously be BYOP...bring your own parts!!!
Carbs need synced??...I have a Sync Pro tool. Need an oil/filter change??..bring your fresh oil and filter with you. Chain/sprocket job...bring them along too, etc, etc.
Come and get your hands dirty!!...help others with whatever knowledge you may have to offer. It will be a fun day I'm sure :good2:
I can't guarantee that you will leave here a qualified FJ mechanic  but you will gain some knowledge, see some FJ mods and maybe find some new friends and riding buddies :good2:
More to follow... (popcorn)
John.
Dude i'm in this is a great idea!!!!!!!
I'd love to attend but my bike is in a few pieces and won't be on the road as I just bought it 2 weeks ago.

Rob, you can come over on 4 wheels and say hi to the crew that turn out...as well as learn a wee bit if your interested. You can ship your FJ over on a trailer and we'll help ya rebuild it :rofl2:  :good:

Pat, I can't take all the praise, if any...without Paul's (paulfj03) input/knowledge and offer to help, as well as one or two others I have spoken with, these kind of things just wouldn't get off of the ground.
Like you and many others here, I want to help out by giving back, (in whatever I can), in an effort to keep these old girls rolling for many years to come. I have learned a lot from this forum and from people that I have met, in person, that have helped me maintain my FJ to a decent standard...We can ALL learn from each other :good2:
If we all keep taking from the well, without giving back, the well will eventually run dry... (popcorn)

That date should work for me. I'll head up on the FJ and bring what I can. As we get closer to that date we will know what tools we will need... It would be cool to have some of the local FJ gurus like Jake, Bob N, Zwartie, Hersey289 to name a few; who have been active members for years and have awesome FJs! :good2:
Working on our bikes; having cold beverages, saving big spendolies on required maintenance done right.... That's hard to beat!!!! :good2: Big thanks to ya, John... For hosting this!!! :drinks:
Good times! :drinks:

Hey Rob, welcome to the fj community. :hi: it would be fun to get your bike up and running... Let us know what you need... We might be able to help.
:greeting:
My bike runs but requires a safety.
I've been busy the past few weeks buying parts for it.
Hopefully my fairing gets delivered by this weekend so I can start on it.
I'm looking at next spring to have it on the road.
I'm hoping to make it to the fj clinic with my bike on trailer or without it.
Sounds good. I'll think of the tools the guys here are usually borrowing and put them in a saddlebag along with my white lab coat.
Hello all, sounds like a great time and it be real nice to meet some fellow fj riders.
Moving to Guelph on labour day weekend, so it just a short ride from there.
Hope to make it and make some new friends.
Jim
Fantastic. I am planning to attend. I will confirm by tomorrow evening.
Eyal
:hi: Back from vacation touring Cape Breton on the old FJ, busy playing catch up at work plus a weekend away to the VRRA (Vintage Road Racing Association) bike races at Mosport the weekend just gone :wacko3: Hectic springs to mind!!!
The clinic is still on for those that want to attend... :good2:
John.
Hope to be there too John,
And I prommis to bring you the Photo of my bike I prommised you for your dresser as you know you still want one.
You all know the 1986 Red and White 1200 was the best of all.
I'm planning to be there too
I still plan on being there.
We should decide on what tools will be needed. I am already bringing valve clearance adjustment tools for Tiger's mean machine. Tentatively, Cathy has to work, so it will be just me coming up on the FJ.
Also, if parts (ie gaskets, orings, or rebuild kits) are needed, be sure to get your order into Randy now at RPM.
Hey Scouser, :). When we are done with your nice 86 it will be the fastest lawn mower you ever had!!! Hahaha!
Looking forward to seeing you guys , and some new faces too!
Funny you should say that. I just hooked a chain up and pulled a tree stump out with it.
What is required to adjust valves?
I'd like to get my valves adjusted but don't have a clue what is needed.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out.

For sure Rob, there is information on here and in the manual about the valve clearance check and adjustment. Your bike has to be cold when we do the measurements so if you can trailer your bike over we will get you sorted. We can take the measurements and if we have the required shims on hand we will change them out right there.
I'll send you an email too.

That's overnight cold.
:hi: I have a decent collection of tools (wrenches, sockets, etc), a lift that will take an FJ up about 3' from the floor, hardware, electrical connectors, lubricants, oil drain pan, etc. However, please bring your own part(s): oil/oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, gaskets, etc, etc, if needed...
The basic idea is to help you to get to know your FJ...to enable you to do some work/jobs/fixes on your FJ (that most people would put their ride in to a shop to have done), either on your own or with the help of other FJ owners around you. If we all work together, we can get rid of some of the fear/apprehension/mystic concerning you about your FJ :good:
Even if you don't need help, please come over and help other FJ owners...lets all work together and build a good tight knit group of proud Ontario FJ owners :good2:
The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m...(I have a birthday bash at 5.30 p.m. and a 1 1/2 hour travel window).
Please contact me (email, PM, etc) if you need my address :good2:

After our talk today, and reading the posts, you can pencil me in. Maybe I can mess up your bench with an oil change, weather permitting...

:good2: Superb..that will allow others, who haven't gone this route yet, to see what a great and easy up-grade this really is. It makes for quicker, cleaner oil changes. Filters are way cheaper than oem and are readily available at all automotive stores around the country. 4 Ltrs will cover you :good:

You're up early mate.
I'm piddling around Orangeville this morning on the FJ. Doesn't look like a day where I want to be more than 30 minutes from home base.
But I don't want to hanging around the office either. One of those restless Sundays.

That means a 7am wakeup... on a Saturday !? :morning2:
Looks like I'll have to wear the mesh jacket to keep the chill in, so I don't drive into the ditch.
Going up Kingston way Fri. morning to pick up that Krauser set. Maybe I can bodge them on for the clinic and finish them off there ... :scratch_one-s_head:
This is my kind of best Saturday activities. See you on Saturday.
BTW, I found what killed my electrical. It was the 30A fuse under the seat. Who puts fuses there? Lol.

Hi Boys really wanted to be there
But we have a funeral service tomorrow
At 11:00 So I have to work there's no way I can
Get to Johns place by 3:00..
I was really looking forward to hanging out
And learning a few things.
I was hopping to see how to make valve adjustments
And replace a clutch spring.
You guys have a good time and I hope John
And Paul will do this again in the spring.
Have a good day everyone.
Hemi Bob
Good day today. Thanks John for the garage, tools and bike lift. Didn't need any work done myself due to it being the 1986 model / red and white. But we all know they are the best anyway.
Quite a few repairs were done as well as translating for John. (sorry he has a funny accent) Pitty about the weather raining all day but the bike is all washed and waxed up again ready for the next ride.
We should all get together again for the same thing. I am open for different locations if anyone wants to get a few things done. Im in Oakville, lots of tools and bike lift available if needed. Anyone east or west of here Im willing to ride out and help.
Jim
Awesome day even with bad weather, got RPM oil adapter installed, and got exhaust fixed...I'll post pics later on day,had great ride back with Eyal ...looking toward to next time already
Thanks to Tiger,Scouser,and Paul
Funny all the bikes on the lift were red and white. Calm down i'm only kidding. It was an awesome day despite the rain. It was nice to meet a few new faces. Thanks to all for the idea, the place and the "technicians" especially Paul Wagar for his encyclopedic FJ knowledge. Everyone was helpful and friendly. It was nice to see a silver and red FJ. It has the same color scheme as my 85 FZ 750. ( both are US bikes). I have never seen one like that before. It also has a red frame. Is that the way they were made ?
And an even dozen people in total (am I correct?). Plus everyone with a running bike showed up on two wheels despite the rain. I slept about two hours when I got home, after hanging up everything to dry out.
Now to write down all the good points to keep in mind for the off season modifications before I forget them. Great to see everyone out.

:hi: WOW...what a turn out :good2: Thank you one and all for turning out on such a wet day :drinks:
A big thank you to Paul, (fj03), who had a three hour ride, last night, after work. He got here just before 8 p.m. and by five after he was in to his first beer...and a valve job on my '85!!! We eventually went to our beds around 1.15 a.m. non the worse for a few 'wobbly pops' :drinks: :wacko3:
Saturday 7 a.m...and its raining cats & dogs!!!! buggerbuggerbugger :ireful:
Paul and I ran down to Judy's Restaurant, (in the Chev!!), not sure who, if anyone would turn up :scratch_one-s_head: However, low & behold two FJ's were sitting in the car park with the two riders already inside having a coffee...over the next half hour or so we were a dozen happy souls eating a hearty breakfast, sharing stories and having a few good laughs with old and new friends :good2:
After breakfast we all headed to my place (3 - 4 minutes away).
1st FJ on the hoist and a couple of others under a canopy, all getting work done of varying kinds by willing hands. Everyone chipped in to help each other out...but a special thank you to Paul (fj03), Scouser & Charlie for all their help.
By 3 o'clock, as planned, the garage was empty as everyone made their way home...all with new people to call friends and two or three FJ riders with happier running FJ's under their asses :rofl2:
We need to get out for a ride, as a crew, before the fall weather really sets in...anyone??
It would be great to get this FJ clinic circus running around Ontario on a monthly/bi-monthly or quarterly basis. Who would be interested in having a day at their place...Scouser, Paulfjo3, myself and one or two others would be happy to turn up and help out were possible (popcorn)
Thank you again guys for a fun day...even if the weather wasn't co operating on the day, the participants certainly did :rofl2:  ... :mocking:
John.
Today was a great day for this greenhorn.I met some really good guys who blew me away with there knowledge of these bikes.Found out my bike is a a US bike and also found my bike tipped over in the trailer :bad:
I've got a long list of repairs/mods to do on my bike before it's on the road next spring.
This forum has been a great help.
Rob
Thanks John for letting me raid your vast surplus of bits'n'bobbles'n'nuts'n'bolts'n'thingymajingys. Your garage is like Dr. Who's TARDIS. Bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. Just proves size doesn't matter (but you know that already... :sarcastic:).
My "new" 30yr old Krausers didn't fall off, and the final bits of bracketry should be complete later this week.
Nice to meet new people and some previous aquaintances. Good to see the guys willing to put in the effort to keep the old cougars running rather than toss them on the scrap heap for some new two wheel bling.
BTW - any of your suppliers got any more calendars? I've no garage, but I'm sure I could find some wall space somewhere for them - I mean it! :mocking:
Oh yeah - my odometer flipped over on my way out there this morning. Now my FJ is newer than yours! :drinks:
This morning I was waiting for the Warden to get ready for shopping so I decided to take a quick look at the starter and give it a good clean out. (1986 1200)
If you decide to have a go yourself here is a little info. The book tells you to take off the tank and a lot of other stuff but this is a short cut.
I didn't take very long at all, about 1hr. start to finish.
• Remove seat and side panels. You only need to remove the L.H. side but I took off both to allow a little more light come through.
• Disconnect battery for safety.
• Take the 3 bolts out of the clutch master cylinder, make note 1 bolt is a lot shorter than the other 2. Hang it to the frame with a tie wrap. (did this because the cable gets in the way)
• Take out the 3 bolts on the alternator. Pull it off and hang it to the frame with a tie wrap.
• Undo the wire to the starter.
• Take out the 3 bolts that hold the starter in place. Then it is just a matter of wiggling it back and forth until it pops out.
• Starter can now be taken apart (2 long Philips head screws) for cleaning and checking of brushes (brushes are only held in by a spring and wire connection) and then re-assemble.
Just make note, when pulling the end cap off the armature shaft (brush end) there are 2 small shims that may fall out. They sit on the shaft when being re-assembled. Opposite end is the gear end. The end cap has a needle bearing in it that you can grease up before re-assemble. I found a lot of carbon dust in mine from the brushes but they were still in good shape. Give everything a good cleaning.
You can now put everything back in reverse order just make note that when pushing in the starter you will have to mesh the gears together so DON'T force it. Just pull it back off turn the gear a little and push it back in. You may have to do this a few times until it slides in nicely.
Hope this helps.

When I left the house on Saturday morning, heading to Erin, I had little idea what will the day be like, or what to expect. Looking at the hourly weather forecast it looked like I could doge the rain (showers) on the way up, and the same on the return. When I got to Judy's Restaurant I was already drenched to my socks. My palms were black with the leather die, and I could feel the cold rain drops running down my neck, all the way down to my ...... well you get the picture.
It was early, though 4 FJ's were standing at the parking lot. I was not prepare to discover a bunch of dudes all wanting to speak FJ projects. Within a minute I felt welcomed to the group. I got to meet with John, and Jim, and Rich and Paul and Charlie, and many others that I forget their names. Please, next time we meet, hold me accountable to remember all your names. You guys are amazing in many ways; some speaks with a funny accent (like myself ha ha), and others just been living life to the full extent. I thank you for the warm welcome.
Enough with the sentimental stuff; the FJ clinic, WOW! The group broke into small groups, each with someone with a need for help, and others with the need to help. Some got their racks fixed; others been oil changed, for me, I got my wish come try. Charlie, who must be an angel (Charlie's Angel LOL), helped me to install a relay on my coils. With a patient of a saint he spliced, cramped, lined, plugged, taped, ... the works. Without Charlie's help I would certainly blow up my 30A fuse again!!! He did not take any shortcuts with respect to the wiring. Thank you Charlie.
Beside Charlie, John and Jim - THANK YOU! for opening your home to a dozen wild beasts, and John, please thank your wife for taking on a gang like us. I hope we left no marks on the driveway. I got my shifter working again after some unexpected metal work performed by Jim. Paul, thank you too, for taking the time to calibrate the Synch machine, which was out of whack. I am sure John put some extra strong English beer in the vacuum tubes instead of the blue liquid.
I would certainly enrol my son and few other friends with a weekend rides. How about we meet in Burlington in 3 weeks for a ride along the Niagara Lakes area? Any takers? I'd love to work out a route with anyone who knows the area.
For the next clinic, although my garage is a mess, and nothing close to what John has to offer, with respect to screws, tools and advise, I would consider inviting you lot to Burlington and use my driveway and garage for the next clinic. I can provide one bike jack (not that fancy as Johns), sockets, synch pro, 27mm bolt for shock disassembly, 41mm seal driver, and some other domestic tools. Perhaps, you put a request for what work you wish to do, and I can ask from some of you to provide any missing tools and expertise for the job.
Now that my bike is riding again, I can enjoy the rest of the season riding. I want also to thank Randy, for putting up with multiple stupid questions and clammily guiding me by phone while I was panicking on my sock rebuild. The bike rides like a dream. It starts cold instantly, the front is sweet and tracking the road like there is no tomorrow, the rear is like an angel on the highway and the devil on the curves, and the breaks are just sweet. Nevertheless, I am not finished with my FJ project. On a short ride today the bike showed gas starvation at low RPM and about 2/3 gas tank full. There are plastics to clean and fix, pre-laod adjustments to do, synch the carbs (to reduce vibrations), change the battery, find a wind-shield, etc etc etc.
This is a great place to be. So, good night for now (secretly, we are all addicted to this forum), and more write-ups will follow with more updates.

Well everyone, I have decided to host a ride in the Niagara region. The ride will take place on Saturday Sept 21. We will leave from my home at 1 pm. Anyone who would like to come early to do some bike maintenance is welcome . Not before 10 o'clock!!. My garage is large enough to hold 20 or more bikes so the more the merrier. I do have a lift as well as many tools, compressor etc. It worked so well with everyone helping each other that we will try to fix what we can. The main focus will be a nice ride around the Niagara area. The ride will consist of only my favorite twisty roads and nothing else. If you wish to come send me a message and I will send you my address.
There is a thing in the town next to me, approx. 3 miles away called BIKETOBERFEST on the same day so if anyone is interested in seeing some chrome etc, bands, food and a Harley draw. The area will be crawling with unmuffled V-twins of various origins. They do have a sort of carnival, beer tent with loud music. I have never been to this event, nor will I so the loud music I can verify as I can hear it at my home. The rest is what others have told me. I am sure they have a website, it is for Biketoberfest in Fenwick Ont. Primarily it is a fundraiser for the Lions Club.
A ride in the viagra region! Where everyone rides with a smile? Sounds like a lot of fun!
We are from the 'nee' region so it might be a bit of culture shock for us. The 21st.
Perfect. My weekends are filing up this fall, but we will be there. We are
looking forward to it.
...Getting the fj and the xj ready!
(Looking forward to many more rides and fj clinics in the future ..
.... Ie: Eyal's in burlington. )
Count me in
I will join. My son and friend may join as well.

sounds great count me in john..

I might be around this weekend for this one as well. If so I can be there for 10am to help anyone with any repairs they may need. I guess all the Red and White ones will have to park on the side in order to make room in the shop and on the lift for the Blue, Silver and Black ones.
Good morning,
Last night I went to start the bike, and I got no starter cranking. We modified the electrical with a relay feed to the coil. It looks like a connection somewhere fails and I don't know where to start looking.
Symptoms:
- switch is on, bike in neutral, engine kill switch in Run, starter press: lights are dimmed, oil indicator goes on, and the new coil relay goes clicking intermittent. The starter does not crank.
- keep holding the starter, the coil relay goes on off rapidly
- the starter cranks for a brief minute and stops.
Could I get some help with tracing the issue? I want to increase the reliability of the bike, and not to be concerned that it would stop. Besides, I want to ride, and had enough mods. Lol.
Thanks, Eyal
Was your starter working properly after adding the relay? Or is this the first attempt to start after adding the relay?
Could this be a weak battery. If you had not just done the relay I would just assume it was a nearly dead battery, based on the symptoms you describe. It's worth a load test.
Dan
1) The relay and starter were working on Saturday when we did the relay change. The bike would crank and start. By Saturday afternoon I noticed symptoms of fuel starvation, small cut offs, at low RPM. Although the tank was about 3/4 full I though it would be related to the fuel problems. I did put a new petcock and removed a fuel filer to route the lines like recommended. Now thinking about it, the cut-offs may be electrical.
2) Battery is brand new, fully charged. I suspected the new battery, so, I replaced back to the old battery also charged.

It could be the starter itself and it's just a coincidence that the relay was changed and you are thinking that is the issue.
The battery (new one) could be bad. If you put back in the old one, the old one was replaced because it was bad anyway.
Even though it registered it was fully charged on the Charger Indicator doesn't always mean it has the cranking amps to turn over the bike. I have had batteries in the past that indicate a full charge but don't have the cranking capacity. Do you have a charger that has a feature/switch for starting. If so hook it up to the battery, switch it to that selection and try it again or if you have access to a load charger you can test the battery.
You can also take both batteries into Canadian Tire and they will do a load test for free on both batteries for you and give you the results.
What may cause to lose the voltage at the red /white wire that comes from the harness? It looks like I get no trigger voltage to the relay. Eyal
Hey all..... I think I would love to join the Southern Ont. FJ group....lol
I picked mine up about a month ago and would have LOVED the opportunity to get to know my bike better... espec. since im heading on a trip to Colorado on SUNDAY with some guys from work. Im rolling the dice and hoping all will be good! If its not, ill be posting questions on here.... so be prepared..lol
There are a few things I think Id love to do to mine ... but for now... the basic introduction will work. My bad for not joining the group earlier...aka.. right away!
I live in Dundas and would love a ride sometime ...
thanks....

We found the problem. But first, thank you Charlie for riding down to Burlington to help with the relay wiring. After hours of tracing lines on the schematics, the voltage loss was found at the fuse socket, actually the ignition fuse connection was loose. We cleaned up the connection and wala, there is power to the relay. Charlie's calm nature helped me to calm down. I was ready to donate the bike to the local salvation army. I am thankful for a great new friendship, and am looking for a ride.
Mark, welcome to it is a wonderful community. Make sure to be online on your trip, because help is just a few clicks away.

:good2: Two thumbs up to all of you guys :good2:
The FJ clinic was intended to help take away some of the fear/mystic of wrenching/trouble shooting ones FJ. To get guys with a common bond together...and then share their experiences, not just on the day but on a more permanent/regular basis... :praising:
This one (wet, rainy) day brought together a dozen people, all willing to chip in and help one another to get the best out of their FJ's and in some cases alleviate a frustration or two!!...I believe that reading this thread you get the feeling that friendships are being formed that will flourish and create a strong core of FJ owners here in Southern Ontario.
Gentlemen, I salute you one and all, for making the effort and turning this in to a successful role model... maybe for others to follow in other areas... :drinks:
Just goes to prove what a great site this is boys and girlie's...and long may it continue :yahoo:
