Title: Russell in Austin, Texas just bought FJ #7
Post by: FJ MCC VII on June 21, 2013, 10:59:34 PM

I'm Russell from Austin, Texas. I bought my first 1100 in 1990, bought a 1200 the following year, and I've had 5 others since. Just bought my latest, a '92 ABS with the blue paint job and 50,000 miles on it. Paid $2,500, thought I got a good deal till I had to ride it straight to the local Yamaha dealer and pay $560 to get all 4 carbs rebuilt. Still, I can honestly say there's no bike I'd be happy riding other than an FJ.
So... Here I go again!

I put at least 10,000 miles on 5 of the 6 previous bikes (one never really got on the road) had one stolen and recovered (DON'T FORGET TO LOCK THE STEERING COLUMN!) My last one got hit by an idiot making a left turn. I was REAL lucky. Walked away, but the bike was toast. It was the only time one of my FJ's was ever laid down, though I came REAL close a few times.  Had my white '92 up to 175 on a flat straight road in South Texas once. When I bought my first 1200 (the white '92), I gave my 1100 to my best friend. We rode from Minneapolis to Mexico and back together. Twice.

I'm no mechanic. Actually, I AM a mechanic - the kind that can crack an engine block changing an air filter. So, I leave the wrenching to those who do it for a living. But I DO love to ride. Currently looking to get my new '92 dialed in, because I do like them to be perfect when I hit the triple digits.

I'm in the market for stock seat and windscreen (prefer clear, but smoke would do). Got a Corbin seat and "Rifle" brand cruising windscreen to sell or trade. Also interested in any input on the ABS system. Seriously considering disconnecting or removing the ABS. Comments?

I'm really glad to be on this board, though the PM's seem a bit complex to me at the moment. My email is russellbbentley at gmail.com.
I'm picking my bike up tomorrow, posting pics of the new one soon, posting pics of the old ones tonight. Check 'em out.
I look forward to being a part of this group.

Welcome Russell, must feel good to get your Kookaloo back. There may be a member or two in Texas close enough to help with the mechanics stuff and save a small bundle by avoiding the DSteeler. If you chose to take on any projects we have all the knowledge on this site to help you get er' done right.

Welcome to the forum.  :good2: Lots of good stuff here to read. IMO it's best to be your own mechanic where possable. Post some pictures when you get time and if possable attend one of the rallies.

Thanks for the welcome, Amigos! I posted some pics of my previous bikes last night. Just got off work, picked up the new bike, now running the way it should. Sorry to make this note short, but I've got some superbike riding to do under tonight's supermoon.  If you hear a loud "BOOM" tonight, that's just me breaking the sound barrier. Tally ho!
