I didn't know what category to put this under...Mods? Maintenance? Problems?
Oh well...I figured this would just be a safe place for it. :hi:
I was out and about, and the sifter bolt broke.
There was a Home Depot not that far(way way closer than home) so I went in and bought a little stock steel, they cut it for me and drilled the hole...lol
I had a crescent wrench with me to make the bends. :yahoo:
It seems to work like a charm until I get the replacement bolt. (popcorn)

It don't have to be pretty, it just has to work and get us home... I love your resourcefulness and problem solving on the fly... My kind of solution when you don't have a machine shop or sheet-metal shop at your disposal. "Necessity is the mother of invention", a lovely quote to stand the age of time... Come on down for a ride when you can, we have some nice roads for the FJ....

I grew up ridding in the bay area...but I have not been that far south as you are..Fresno is about as far south as I have been.
I would like to take 101 all the way down..that is a nice ride. :drinks:
It does not look like I will be able to make the Europe trip I had planned for next year..so maybe I will just see if I can add a few more states to my map. :hi:
Great ingenuity on the broken bolt fix. You should come ride with us at the Colorado FJ rally the 3rd weekend of July.
Fred
Sweet fix on the fly. Happened to me but I didn't think of that to get me home. Your set up is far superior to what I devised.

I understand that the shifter pivot bolt is no longer available (new) through the usual channels.
Is there a need for them, or are there enough spares laying around from parted out bikes?
I ask, as I've been working in my friend's machine shop recently, pondering things that need manufacturing.
If worse came to worse, I suppose we could manufacture clones of your Home Depot bracket!
Steve
Well...I am lucky enough to have a great Big Brother(he really is my big brother..lol) and he has 2 full spare bikes, so I am going to have him send me one.
He thought I had a great idea there and didn't even know why I would need the other bolt :shok: then I reminded him that, that means that there is only 1 bolt holding on my footpeg now. :unknown: and what would happen if I was standing on it to stretch out or something...or any reason really...I like to think myself a pretty good rider :dance2: but I don't think I could recover from having all my weight on that when the only bolt left broke off.
So for now, until he can sent it up to me, if I have to do ANY adjusting of my body, I prop my feet up on the back pegs as to not put any extra stress on the one and only bolt keeping me upright.
A friend of mine broke that bolt on a ride we were taking through northwestern Europe. I ended up riding it back to Germany for him, carefully actuating the shifter clamp with the tip of my boot.
Believe me, I thought about the strength of the single bolt holding the footpeg all the way back home!

Well, before you take the plunge....
I already did. I am having the bolt made right now and it should ship next week. The RPM shifter bolt will be made from stainless steel and have the small diameter head for use on the rubber foot peg washers as well.
It has a nice bubble head for those who want to polish as well.
I hope to have them by next Friday.

ha, that just depends on who you are talking about..... speaking of... let me know when your bike is good to go so we can get out there and test out the new bolt!
Hi Randy,
It would be great if you stocked/included the correct riv nut as well.
On both of our '92's these have failed. My fix is to use a prong nut (flatten the prongs) like this:
http://www.screwfix.com/p/4-pronged-tee-nut-m6-x-9-pack-of-10/79359 (http://www.screwfix.com/p/4-pronged-tee-nut-m6-x-9-pack-of-10/79359)
that fits in the hole in the backside of the frame. Works but the threads just reach, in fact I take the rubber damper wahser off so it will.

Jeff,
If Randy can't fix you up, send me a PM. I have a couple of the correct Riv-Nuts left over that FJMonkey (Mark) sent me when I needed a "fix".
You have to drill the hole in the frame for it to fit, but once in place, it works.
Here's my thread about the subject:

Let me know if you need a couple.
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the offer! I will send you a PM.
Probably obvious, but I take you are installing the riv nut into the outside of the frame by boring out the original hole, correct?
Thanks,
JEff
