I really tried to make a spare ; Now Murphy's Law is going to show me hell for not taking it to a third key locksmith! :dash2: Any ideas on the easy way to replace it?.... I might try and see if the seat lock will come off,,,, What a pain in the A**! :dash1: Any thoughts will help Thanks ....

The ignition key port is easy to remove. Remove your handlebars, remove the upper triple clamp and remove the 2 screws that hold the ignition on, unplug the connector and away to the locksmith you go. You can remove the ignition without removing the bars and triple clamp, but I found it is easier to remove the other hardware.

Be aware that while the ignition key "fits" the seat lock that the seat lock may not have as many tumblers / slides in it as the ignition lock. Its a common practice in auto and bike locks. A key cut for the seat lock may not unlock the ignition. I would recommend as Fred said. Pull the lock and get it keyed or replace it with a new one.

You might get lucky and have access to the connector on the ignition switch wires.
Along with pulling the bars and top triple clamp to get the ignition switch out, I also had to pull the tank off to get access to that connector.....which you can't do without removing the seat.....which you can't do without the key.
If you get lucky...cool...if not....snip, snip.

As far as I know all FJ's used one key for everything. The only time this is really different is when someone installed and aftermarket ignition switch.
A good locksmith should be able to make a replacement key from code.
I used a couple of long 1/4" drive extensions and 10mm socket to remove the two bolts from the ignition switch, easy enough to reach without ripping half the bike apart ,or try a key from another bike on the seat lock :scratch_one-s_head:

I have ordered a brand new one from Fleabay for 25.85 with free shipping it comes with 2 keys.. ill still have to have 1 cut for the tank and seat,,, one locksmith wanted 125.00 to come out! i did get the ignition out and brought it to another guy and he wanted 90.00 :dash1:
So i went the cheapest route,,, I think

Now that your ignition switch is out look for a number on it for a possable key code. And 90 bucks is a rip..... Glad you making head way. You will still need a key for your tank and seat.

You are correct one key for everything but here's the rub, they don't use all the tumbler /slides (in the FJ it is slides) for the seat/fuel cap locks, They might only use 4 or 5 slides out of a possable 8 as an example. So a key cut to open the seat and fuel tank would fit into the ignition but wouldn't let you turn the ignition switch. But a key (master) cut for all the slide positions in the ignition will align the 4 or 5 slides in the seat lock.
I have never had the FJ locks apart. My statements are based on other bike and auto locks that I have had apart.
I am thinking that on his ignition lock there might be a code number. If it has a number then sometimes a dealer can code cut or a locksmith with the code book could cut a key. If it had a code I would try that. IF it has a number on it then take your title or proof of ownership with you. Most will not cut a key by code unless they are convinced you do in deed own the machine.

New Honda's used to come with 5 keys, which were handed to the owner on a key ring when they took delivery of their new bike. I could not tell you how many times those owners have come back within days, weeks or months asking if we kept a spare key for their bike.
How do you lose 5 keys? You leave them all on the same ring!
As a mechanic I have attended literally hundreds of vehicles over the decades to deal with lost keys. I have seen them towed from clearways and impounded, stripped overnight, stolen and cause all sorts of drama to do with not being able to get where you are meant to be at the time you are meant to be there.
Having seen so much of this first hand, the first thing I do when I buy a vehicle is get keys cut if it doesn't come with enough.
All my vehicles have a spare key on them somewhere and a least one more at home.
If we go on a trip my wife and I generally have one each (transponder keys)
Think all this sounds like overkill? Then you've never lost your keys at REALLY inconvenient time or place.
As well as a key I leave a $50 note in the bike. Try getting petrol out some part timer at a garage 300 km's from home when you've lost or forgotten your wallet.
If you've got the original FJ key they can cut one from the number but it's about 4 times the price of cutting from a key.

I think my key has the code stamped on it. Have it stashed away in a file somewhere and in my wallet, assuming a dealer can make a key from the code.
So the FJ doesn't have the security bolts on the ignition? When I did the ignition recall on the FJR, the bitch was drilling out the security bolts to get the ignition out.
I keep a complete set for all our cars and bike in the home safe.
