Title: It's a HOT time at RPM
Post by: racerrad8 on June 08, 2013, 08:36:06 PM
Well, I spent today working in the shop and let me tell you things are smoking hot here at RPM (http://www.rpmracingca.com).

Yesterday the high temperature record of 101* was tied, but today is a different story...

So, as I was listening to the Saturday morning radio shows around noon today I heard, "It is currently 100* outside".

I went and got my infrared temp gun and pointed it at the metal air hose reel at my bench and low & behold...100*
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc517/racerrad8/IMAG0283_zps0a867eaf.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/racerrad8/media/IMAG0283_zps0a867eaf.jpg.html)

So, I have been working the rest of the day and decided to wrap it up around 6pm. I thought, I wonder what the temp is now. So, I shot the gun at the roller tool tray I use next to my work bench and it says; 111*. Now remember this is inside the shop out of direct sunlight.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc517/racerrad8/IMAG0284_zps31dc8357.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/racerrad8/media/IMAG0284_zps31dc8357.jpg.html)

Everything in the sun was 120*+...

I walked into the office to do a little paperwork and turned on the A/C, after about 15 mins of running the temp in here is finally down to 91*.
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc517/racerrad8/IMAG0285_zps8b79abf5.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/racerrad8/media/IMAG0285_zps8b79abf5.jpg.html)

I have to admit, RPM (http://www.rpmracingca.com) is a HOT place to be.

Randy - RPM (http://www.rpmracingca.com)

As an experienced explorer of many hot-as-hades attics i strongly suggest you drink plenty of water and don't forget to replenish your electrolytes..... heat stroke can sneak up faster than you think.

hottest attic i've ever been in for any length of time was 150 degrees F and it wasnt any fun at all.

KOokaloo! .....out in the wide open spaces  :good2:

Right on brother Frank.
Remember the hydration curve, don't get behind it, you'll never catch up.
Hydrate *before* the event....and of course durning. Camel backs are a must.
Watch the color of your urine. If it's medium or dark yellow...STOP..find shade and rest and hydrate.
Heat stroke is no joke. Once heat stroke happens to you, it happens earlier and earlier with future exposure.

We all know about the wind chill factor, but the inverse is also true. Riding in hot weather causes the blast furnace effect. It can be 105 or 110 outside, but with a 70 mph wind, it's actually closer to 120 or 125 degrees inside your helmet and riding suit.

Ah yes Frank the attic a/c service call . I don't take the temp cause I don't wanna know how hot it is.

Randy , Ya know for about 15k I can make that shop a walk-in cooler for ya .

At the very least you should put a couple swamp coolers in there and change your latitude. :wacko3:

You know I do need some stuff done on my fj , would you be interested in a barter deal?

Yes very hot yesterday did the run from Carson City over Mt Rose highway to Lake Tahoe then down towards Sacramento as I passed thru the 5000 ft mark I noticed the back of the bike sliding thought I needed to stop and have a drink, pulled up in a Birch park ( I think is the name) in the shade here's a guy on his Harley shaking his head at me wearing Jacket full face helmet and gloves, "aren't you hot in all that gear"? I said yep but I haven't found the store that sells that Kevlar skin you have so I wear my jacket :sarcastic:.
Was going to mount up and ride on, checked tyres front ok, back soft and going down, checked tyre found the culprit a nail, (mofo was a comment that passed my lips) no repair kit, went to use my PH damn battery was flat forgot to charge it the night before lol, there was a ranger onsite let me use his ph to contact Randy need help buddy I'm stuck, Next think Craig Z turns up in his pick up, load bike go to BBQ pours plenty of liquid refreshment into me stagger back to his place about midnight, note to self drink more WATER!!!! :) :)

Thanks Randy for organising Craig, Craig a huge thankyou for coming to my assistance a bloody life saver, to me this is what this list is so good about is helping us out in the time of need THANKS GUYS!!  :good2: :good2:

If you are not peeing often and clear you are behind the curve. Try the chem war fair suits in the sand box. When you hit the wall you will just fall over. Then its IV and bag time if your lucky.  :good2:

Reminds me of replacing my clutch in the Firehawk  in a carport at my (at the time ) girlfriend's house in Phoenix during the summer................
I had a cooler full of ice packs under there with me, and I would swap out damp towels that I would wear on my head while I was working under the car...........
115 in the shade sucks!

I used to install fire protection systems, worked in launceston one summer,  42°c outside one day,  don't know what it was inside the black tin roof,  but bottles of water didn't last long

Hey alan , when I lived in phoenix years ago I put a swamp cooler on wheels hooked up to a garden hose and an extension cord to it and just pointed the air on me as I worked on the car.  you get a 35 degree td with that set up.

In a dry environment, swamp coolers ROCK!  And they are cheap to run, water an a fan motor. I moved to Colorado into a house that had one.  What the hell is this I thought?  After I figured out how to use it, I was genuinely impressed with how cold it gets, you could make the house too cold, in the heat of summer.  It would work for shit here on the humid east coast though.

In the last shop/warehouse I worked in we had a commercial version of that. It was about 4 or5 feet high X 4 feet wide. You could roll it around, put out a ton of air. In a dry area it works great.  http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200312877_200312877 (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200312877_200312877)

I can agree completely, here in Tucson it has been 107 lately. My shed has no cooling of any kind, and I have been trying to work on the FJ and I have to start at five in the morning and can usually get three hours of so before it get to hot in there to work. I aquired a fixer upper portable cooler so I hope it will help in the future. :good2:

Mark,
When I was old enough (about 5 years it seemed) and worked summers installing residential ac systems (Family business). First task was to get the unit running and blow air into the attic, then installed the ductwork. The farther along we would get the hotter the attic became. I wonder how many crews did it the opposite way. In those days roof top units were popular for homes. Kept a bucket of water on the roof to cool down tools.

My last few summer attic installs i've had the homeowners stay at a hotel for the night and i did my work third shift.

I passed out in an attic once from heat stroke and my tolerance for extended stay in the heat dropped way off after that.

oh yeah , once you heat stroke out your htl drops a few degrees and drops more everytime after you overheat yourself.
I know old techs who can't even take 90 degrees anymore.

I do my commercial installs 3rd shift, but my res stuff the homeowner wants to watch and complain about the mess.

Well,

2014 is turning out to be another scorcher, but this year we have humidity too. It is 3pm and 90+ in the shop.

Except for some reason this year, we are getting monsoonal moisture swirling up from Nevada

We have had sprinkles light showers a couple early morning hours this week too.

Haha Randy, what part of Oz were you in because here on the gold coast i checked the temp the other day cause it was warm and keep in mind its winter here, it was 90 degrees your scale. Summer is a whole other level, but i love it. I was in t shirt and jeans yesterday and was a little warm in the direct sunlight.

Yup, every summer I have to explain to at least a couple of people that it isn't that kind of a jacket, and once over 90 degrees, it's actually cooler under the mesh than bare skin is. Of course, I also wear the Heat-out tee shirts, and occasionally water drench them before the afternoon ride home..

Well, it is hotter today than yesterday by about 9*, but at least there are no clouds in the sky and the humidity is much lower today.

Here is the temp of my FJ sitting in the shop...

That is almost as hot as the news coming out of RPM today; RPM Parts Update (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=4887.msg122268#msg122268)

Have fun & stay cool.
