Title: Generic fuel filter option?
Post by: Bminder on May 30, 2013, 10:50:48 AM
I searched 'fuel filter' and looked through a bunch of posts, but couldn't find one that mentioned an off-the-shelf fuel filter that would work in place of the Yamaha one. Has anyone found a filter that is the same diameter and will fit in the rubber grommet under that tank?

I can't find the number right now, but there is a NAPA filter that is almost an exact match.

I went in on a slow day, and the counter man and i searched until we found it.  It only took 5-10 minutes to find it.

It's been in there for quite some time now.

Thanks, I'll check.
Did they do a parts number cross reference or something? How did they search for it?

He brought out an armload of likely suspects, and we started opening boxes.

I thought the front of the box was stashed in the tray of my toolbox, but I've moved twice since then.  I'll keep looking for it.

Sounds like you got a very helpful parts guy.  I can picture most of them telling you to go take a hike.

You can buy a copy of the original style filter on ebay,,last flter I bought localy was a universal fitment one, same od, and. Two sizes of hose fitment ends built in, just cut the smaller not needed one off and fits fine in the grommmet and bracket

I would recommend you buy a Yamaha filter. The level of filtration (microns) varies a lot between filters. I see ranges of 2 to 100 microns. Just for comparison 70 microns is approx the diameter of a human hair. One filter that advertises on  e bay for FJ's claims 60 microns (those are Chinese microns so be aware).
I do know that it doesn't take much crap in the needle and seats to cause a leak. IMO be safe on this one and get the Yamaha replacement.
