Title: CASTROL 20W50 MOTORCYCLE OIL
Post by: ANVIL99 on May 16, 2013, 07:06:37 PM
Hello guys, does anybody run 20w50 motor oil in their bikes anymore I used to run this in my new 86 fj seemed to work well? I know it,s for when the outside temp is above 15c.
I put motal 5100 10w40  synthetic in my new old 1992 fj1200abs(75,000km) and now I believe I have a oil leak from my base gasket behind the jugs.Thinking the higher viscosity
of 20w50 and a re-torque of the head bolts might stop or lessen this leak.Oil leak is "manageable" but a pain in the ass.

All I run these days is Lucas semi-synth MC oil, 10w40....  With a modern oil, I don't feel a need for the heavy stuff. Lighter oil flows better, especially thru small galleries, and protects just as well.  The engine noises aren't as loud, either, which I interperet as better lubrication...

I found 20w50 Motul 5100 makes the clutch slip. (On three different 1993 FJ`s)- 10w 40 5100 Motul works fine - but think I`ll change ta something else cause Motul at $50 for 4 litres has become ridiculously expensive.  :nea:

I just go as close as I can to what the manufacture spec's are. They designed the engine, transmission and clutches to run on there specified oil. Thanks to the spin on oil filter from RPM changing oil is so easy and clean that I change oil every 3 or 4,000 miles. It's always clean and clear.  :good2:
