I have done a fair bit of searching around trying to find out which front calipers will be a straight bolt on to my 85 FJ1100. I can find lots of info for 89 models onwards, but not the 85's. I only want to do the calipers, not the forks or rim.
Would the YZF series be o.k to use?

Gareth, I believe the only ones that are a bolt on mod are off an FZR400RR.

Thanks for the tip, once I searched FZR400RR I got lots of info! Went straight onto ebay and bought a pair for $50. I was very close to buying some blue spots but thought to double check.

I had a hard time finding anything on ebay under the search FZR400RR, so I tried just the FZR400. I think I picked up in my forum searches that the RR version was specific just to the U.K, something like that.

But for some reasons U.S sellers charge an arm and a leg for postage, whereas European sellers have access to economy postage rates around $9.

Two different styles of fzr caliper, one on the fzr is the same bolt pattern as the 88 ect fzr 400rr is the only one that fits 84/85 85mm bolt holes, and the rr is twin spot

They will work I think, but are NOT the monoblock 400RR clipers mate.
The RR was not available in the US so no good looking there.........I think maybe it was available here in Aus - and was released in UK/Europe.
Maybe they could be found in Japan?

I found a wreckers that sells the rr ones $85 each, also know of a set in canada $150 including postage, , was going to do this same swap myself to keep original looking, but bought forks and blue spots instead, figured I may as well ,changed the other 2 so no issues with spares
Be sure to check the straight line distance between the mounting holes and compare that measurement with your forks. There is a reason we convert over to the 88+ fork lowers.

Well I guess I will just have to wait and see when they arrive, if they are a few mm out I can easily fix that, at least we will know for sure if the non-RR calipers fit the FJ1100 fork leg, could be a big money saver compared to the RR calipers.

I tried the fzr400rr 4 pot caliper experiment.I first purchased a set from an 88 3en1 fzr400rr.These do not fit the early fj antidive forks(they are still in my shed somewhere if anyone wants em :dash1: ).Then I purchased a set from an 89 3tj1 which are a match (I suspect that 3tj1 calipers may be the only ones that will bolt on) .I did find however that because they are designed for solid 5mm rotors that with a new set of pads they did not have enough gap between the pads to fit over the early ventilated 7.5mm fj rotors.This was overcome by milling 2mm off each pad.Once they were installed there was a little improvement in brake "feel" but not much.Greater improvements were gained from braided lines and an fjr1300 master cylinder.I have since gone with the later model forks,88 fzr1000 rim & blue pots.In hindsight I would recommend not bothering with the "fzr400rr" caliper experiment.hope this helps

I have kept all the FJ11 forks etc and bought blue spots. The necessary very nice alu billet caliper brackets, which fit the 11 mountings perfectly are on Ebay UK.

They are very nice, and make the upgrade easy, but for the same price or less I bought blue spots 89 forks and wheel, the british pound is not good value for us down under

Er......whats this about The Pound? It´s more or less dropped out of existence compared to the Aussie dollar. And the euro.....used to be 1.50 euro to pound now 1.19. So, a German guy I know simply came to the UK and bought a motorcycle 3000 euros cheaper than in Germany, with extra goodies. All because the Pound was now weak. Your dollar is incredibly strong against other countries at the mo. Or not?
£90 is at the moment $141.00 aus dollers. Not too bad, and I would of bought the adapters if I could afford them. ,I got the parts needed for $95
