Title: What year tank do I have?
Post by: RollyK on May 12, 2013, 01:00:58 PM
Help!!!!
I have a 1986 fj1200 and need a new cap.  I don't have the old one.  The indent for the filler is forward on the tank toward the bars and is very shallow.
I checked the schematic for the 86 and the indent seemed much deeper.  My bike is a Canadian version, if that makes any difference.  The filler hole is not centered in the indent.  I tried to attach pictures but I can't figure out how to do that.

Please help.  This is driving me nuts.  Is my tank an 1100 or an early 1200 or??

Thanks

The tank you have appears to be from a 1985 FJ1100. Here is an example of an 86' tank.

Thanks

I knew something wasn't right.  Now I need to find an aftermarket cap to fit.  Anybody have a suggestion?

I'm not aware of a aftermarket option for the 84/85 tank caps.
I do see them come up from time to time on FleaBay.

Does anyone out there have a spare 84-85 fuel cap they might sell?  There must be some sort of cap that would fit.  Maybe from an RZ500 or something.
Doesn't need to be a locking cap.

Just so you know, that tank has a higher capacity and a petcock that has prime on it, both advantages over the 86, whose only advantage is that it has a flush gas cap. Does it just mount with no modifications, and sit tight? I might consider switching mine out one day if so.

Yep, just like the seats, plug and play.
Personally, I like the recessed cap feature. They look cool.
Less worries about the dreaded gas spout dribble and getting gas on your tank's paint when you have the recessed cap.
However, in the past, The extra 1/2 gallon on my '84's tank has meant the difference between walking and riding...well....sometimes anyway (right Mike?)

Sorry guys, been away from the computer.  The Maple Leafs are actually playing in the playoffs.
The tank is slightly larger and I like the flush cap too, but unfortunately this is the tank I have.  This tank had the 86 petcock (electric reserve).  I am adapting a Harly manual petcock.  I have always had to turn off my fuel anyway (bikes and sleds).  Still wondering if anyone has a cap they might part with.

hey kyle, the flush mount fillers won't fit the early tanks,  without cutting and welding
