Title: digital/aftermarket fuel gage
Post by: giantkiller on May 05, 2013, 11:58:03 AM
Does anyone know of a digital fuel gauge. I'm making a, custom dash/gauges on my fj. I'm using the original idiot lights. The digital gauge I'm using is digital speedo, bar gragh tach, temp. I would like to put a digital fuel gauge. Or a smaller analog one where the original gauge was. But I have no clue what would work with our sending units
Any help for an electrical idiot would be great

Thanks Dan

I would measure the power that feeds the gauge. Stuff like that at my work converts voltage or some kind of signal power to a reading. Our PH gauge has a range of 4 to 20, so the PH sensors put out 4 to read the lowest PH and 20 to read the highest. Once you know what the fuel level sender is putting out you can find a gauge that would work.

Thanks monkey. Remember your talking to an electrical idiot here. How do I go about measuring that. Or does anyone know what our sending units put out?
Thanks Dan

Dan, I know just enough about electrical stuff to make sparks and let the smoke out....then think to myself, that was bad right???

All I can add is full tank should read 7 ohms +-3, empty tank should read 95 ohms +-5.  Regulated voltage off regulator 13 -15 volts. It been a long time but I thought fuel gauges were sold by voltage and the ohm ranges. Could be wrong. The resistance numbers are from the 84 service manual.
