Title: Exhaust systems
Post by: Shaun on September 24, 2009, 10:51:13 AM
Apparently I am going to be looking for a new exhaust system for my bike. The collector box is forming holes in several place and leaks like a sieve. I like the balance look of a 4 into 2 system but I mainly see 4 into 1 setups. I don't want something overly loud, and I would prefer 4 into 2 but that may have to change. Any suggestions as to a reasonable system out there, or different manufacturers a guy could investigate.

Thanks
Shaun

Shaun,
I just put a Kerker 4-into-1 system on my 90. I found it from a seller on e-bay that has posted a bunch of Kerker systems that he claims are New Old Stock. It arrived in a Kerker box that looked like it had been sitting around for quite some time, but it was definately in New shape.
I installed it in about 2 hours from start to finish. it fit very well, and is not overly loud. I weighed everything that I removed/installed on the bike too, and I saved a total of 21 lbs from the factory system. I took some video clips of the sound difference also, I can post the youtube links to them if that is allowed. The only thing that didn't seem to fit quite right is the bracket that you mount to the factory exhaust can mount point. it seems just a bit too short, and they have you change the height of the rear brake lever to compensate(so that it doesn't contact the midpipe). I think i am going to make a slightly longer bracket myself, and fix the brake lever back to where it should be, cause I am not used to it being that much higher than the footpeg.
Anyway, mine is a 90, but he had posted different ones for various years of FJ.

That would be great, your bike is the same colouring as mine and it looks like you have the 4 into 1 on there. It looks pretty nice. I'll have to check for the kerker system on eBay but so far no luck.

With the Supertrapp you don't have to remove the manifold to access and drain the oil. I believe with the Kerker you do. A serious consideration.

Supertrapp is no longer available, unless you can get one by special order. I haven't tried to call 'em to see, but that'd be my first choice if I was looking for a pipe. If somebody does call them, please post their reply.

TIA, and Kookaloo!  (http://i34.tinypic.com/20pd4r4.gif)

I would shy away from V&H
The exhaust flange fit was horrible, you can't drain oil (I knew that when I bought them) and their customer service sucks.

On the 92 I had years ago, I put a Vance & Hines SS2-R on it.  Really nice nickel plated pipe, not too loud, ran great with minimal carb fiddling.  I think it had to come off to access the oil drain plug.  Unfortunately, they are no longer made.  So on the 91 I recently bought, I put a V&H Supersport on it.  Cheap ($328.00), fit ok, had to re-position the rear brake linkage for clearance, it's too loud, the paint started to flake off the headers almost immediatley (and I used latex gloves to put it on), it caused a 1/8 throttle hubbabubba stumble that fuel screw adjustments aren't curing (I did up the main jets).  Still needs some carb fiddling (can't wait to pull those carbs AGAIN).  Oh, and you can't get to the drain plug.  I now remove the left oil cooler line to drain the oil.  Not as thorough as the drain plug, but good enough for me.

Here's the links to my Exhaust Video clips
My camera doesn't quite record the volume of loud things very well.
With the pipes removed, inside my garage, it was like 10 times louder than the video clip sounds like.
I wasn't sure if my neighbors would come out to investigate, but none did.
The Kerker system isn't too loud. it's not annoying going down the road, but the one drawback I can already look forward to is when it comes time to change the oil again......well......you know the rest. :negative:

That looks and sounds pretty fine to me, so far though no joy on the market, but the hunt will continue. Thank you for taking the time to post vids and pics though, it is a clean looking system that is for sure. And quite possibly quieter than my existing set up.

Thanks
Shaun

Shaun,
I e-mailed the guy I bought my system off of, to see if he had any more available, but have not heard back from him yet.
I'll let you know if he responds.

One thing to watch for with that Kerker exhaust is when you start to hear a metallic rattling sound in the muffler it's time to re-pack it.

The resonator is only rolled over on the front side of the muffler (pipe) and when the packing material burns away it vibrates.

Does this look familiar?  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380147104857&viewitem= (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380147104857&viewitem=)

I just made my own muffler hanger.  There was no way I was going to change the brake position, although I did think about dimpling the pipe so it wouldn't interfer with the brake peddle.  But, in the end I went with the longer hanger because it moved the pipe further away from the foot peg mount.

Nice system, but I have noticed a bit of the muffler packing coming out.  Over all great value, and I would recommend, although I haven't seen any up for auction lately.

Later.

Thats the guy I bought mine from.
That may have even been the auction I won. seems about the price i paid for mine.
I know he listed a bunch of systems for various years of FJ.
And I am going to make my own longer hanger cause I don't like my brake lever like that.
maybe he has more.

I know it the same seller  :i_am_so_happy:, but this is the one I won sometime ago  :good2:.  I just finally put it on my bike.  I put the same angle bends as the stock hanger onto my own hanger, but made it a few inches longer, and it worked out great.

Later...  :bye2:

Nice system, but I have noticed a bit of the muffler packing coming out.

Yep, I have a Kroaker on my '92. It's ok, but there are better systems out there.
Re: Brake pedal; I cut a triangular notch on the botton side of the brake pedal arm, bend the arm down, and re welded the  arm to get the pedal down to where I needed it so I did not have to dimple the collector tube.
I wanted to keep the tube and muffler up high and tight as possible.
Re: muffler packing; same thing happened to me with the fiberglass packing blowing out. I repacked the muffler with course kitchen (scouring grade) stainless steel. Never had a problem since.

The big drawback with the 4 into 1 Kroakers is the lack of access to the oil drain. What a PIA.

Knowing what I know, if I had to do it over, I would have invested in a 4 into 2 into 1 system made by D&D (which are still available) The 4 into 2 into 1 design allows full access to the oil drain plug.

Shaun,
The guy I bought mine from has one for sale on e-bay right now. It says for 92-93, but I've been told that the mounting point on the footpeg bracket is all that's different, so it should fit yours with maybe a hanger bracket modification.
so here's the link.

I bought a delkavic stainless exhaust for my 84 FJ. Love it!!! its not Cheap-but still reasonable and so worth it. you have a multitude of cans to choose from with carbon fiber or polished stainless to choose from. and you can see what each can looks like installed on an Fj on there website. The sound is fantastic-even with the DB eliminators installed. This system worked very well with my big bore kit and custom jetting. Check out the website-www.delkevic.com
