Title: rear brake master cylinder replacement alternative
Post by: giantkiller on May 02, 2013, 09:14:31 PM
I need a rear brake master cylinder. Or rebuild. I would like to put a new one on instead of fixing old. So I looked for a new one. One for a raptor 700 came up for $46. It looks just like the fj master. So I go out and compared my old fj master to the one on my raptor 700 they appear to be exactly the same. Same mounting, same outlet, even looks the same length push rod only difference I could see (other than the silver color). Is the part that screws onto the push rod.

So new OEM yamaha rear brake master for $46. Here I come.

The most important thing that must match is the piston/bore size.

Usually the bore size is somewhere on the external of the cylinder.

I just checked the part numbers and it shows for FJ 84-92 only.

I know the 93 master cylinder is different.

I do stock both of the Yamaha rebuild kits.

Just trying to keep him safe...bigger or smaller might mean no brakes...

Ok, I got your PM.
What I have is a Brembo  1/2" m/c. The unit will fit, everything lines up, however unlike the FJ m/c which has a threaded holes for the mount bolts, the Brembo has smooth mount holes. You will need to thru bolt it. Some stainless cap head bolts on the inside face and stainless acorn nuts on the outside would look fine.

Still want it?

Pat you are great, I was hoping to meet everybody at the WCR but had to cancel. Due to nephews wedding on the same weekend as the rally. If I don't show up my family will disown me. Hopefully I'll make it next year.
Thanks again

Hey Pat I keep forgetting to tell you thanks for the rear master cylinder! It looks great.  I did check the master cylinder on the 700 raptor I have. It's 1/2"also so it will work as a cheap oem replacement.
Thanks again
