Title: what rims to use
Post by: fjlouie on April 30, 2013, 08:16:09 PM
G'day I was bought to my attention that changing the rims to 17"  will improve the bike greatly, so the question is what is goin to be the best rims to use. Is there any that will fit without machining brake brackets and sprocket fitments. I was told to use yzf600r rims which look good but require a few mods to fit and I dont mind that but if there is an easier way to do this I am all for that too. looking forward to any ideas.
Cheers Louie

Use the search function... We already have a boat load of really good info here on bolt on wheel mods. I upgraded my 86' with a 92 GSXR 750 rear wheel and 87/88 FZR1000 front wheel with 89 FJ forks.... That should get you going....

I just finished the same mods Fjmonkey is talking about. Straight forward modification. Made a huge difference, after 200 miles on her I'm still turning in to early going into the turns. Makes the fj feel a lot lighter and more responsive. If decide to go this way, I found my 87/88 fzr front shell at Neianderthal bike salvage in San bernardino ca.

I have done the similar mod the FJmonkey mentions on my 89'. I used a 92' GSXR750 rear wheel and hardware, and a 88' FZR750R front wheel. The following link is the step by step how to for the GSXR rear wheel.

GSXR Wheel mod link.

http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2465.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2465.0)

The 87'/88' FZR750R/1000 front wheel is a direct bolt on for 89' and later models, 84'-87' models will need 89' and later front fork swap to use the 17" front wheel.

Same here ! Just got her out on the road a few days ago and I have the same impression. I didn't do 200 miles yet but its coming.... :yahoo:
1993 GXSR 750 rear wheel
1988 FZR 17 X 3.5 front wheel
New Bearings
Michelin Road Pilots
Honda F4i shock
18T front sprocket
38 T rear Sprocket
EK ZZZ Chain
Led tail light, trimmed the rear fender and 55 W front running lights
Pre wired for Hella horns
Raised the rear end up 1.5 inch's
Handles, steers and rides a lot better than before but with so man changes I don't know what to attribute it to. All I know is that it's a lot better. Been a busy winter on e bay  :dance2: :dance2:

Don't forget the FZR brake rotors will not work on the FJ, to large. You also need smaller rotors 298mm. Hope this helps.

G'day Kurt mine is a 86 found a 97 fzr front wheel. What do I get the smaller rotors off?  I am new to the fj and altho have loved bikes for a long time I am only in recent yrs got the bug big time its a big world this world of bike so sometimes I get information overload, I have a couple of projects on the go and cant get enough of the time in the shed just love it. I was riding a xj900f till 2 months ago when the fj came up and for $800 just had to have it always loved the fj, have had the front forks done and the rear shock rebuilt and after a bit of working out I think I have the shock set right.
Anyway getting a bit side tracked thanks for the advice and have started spending most of my time on this site trying to soak in all the wisdom the fj enthusiasts loving this

Hello Louie, for an 86 as I understand it. What you want is a front wheel from 86-87 fzr1000 or an fzr 750 same years I think. Now they are also changing the lowers fork legs to an FJ 89 and up and the 89 and up FJ rotors. You can also install blue pot calipers from a YZF ?? just make sure they bolt on from the side not the top. This gives you bigger rotors 298mm, 3.5X17 front wheel and the option of upgrading the brakes to the ones used on a R1 up to 2003 I think. Also lets you remove the anti dive system. Hope this helps. Other members if any of this is wrong please correct me.

Axel is a different diameter. You will have to machine for different bearings. Unless you can find bearings with the correct ID, OD, W. The bearings are 2mm larger OD if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

Thanks Kurt I thought it would be something simple like that will look into the bearings and if no luck I can move on the rim I have.

Louie if you all ready have a wheel, it only makes sense to use it. Make sure that it's not to wide and the bolt pattern for the brake rooters is the same.

Wow, what a thread. I have been looking for a 17x3.5 front rim for my 1990, and seem to remember reading that pre 2003 FZ1 would fit. Long story cut short, found one, ordered it, and it arrived . . .  disc mounts very different and doesn't look like the mechanical speedo would fit either. Buggar !!
Anyway, spoke to the Sydney wrecker today and he is happy to take it back, but I need to find the correct one.
Seems it is not the FZ1 I need but the FZR1000/750. OK, got that bit, couple more questions, what years would fit, is it only the 87/88, and I assume all other FJ bits would fit, blue spots, discs, axle, speedo drive for example.
Been using the search function, boy is there some info to wade through !!
Anyway, for all those members whose information and advice has helped me to where I am with EFFIE1, a huge thanks.

Oh, BTW, just fitted a 14mm clutch master after struggling with the old one and an extra steel clutch spring for the last 12 months, what a difference ! 2 fingers and no slip, awesome.

Cheers, Dazza

Yep, FZR 87/ 88 are the only years that will bolt on with no mods. Did my 1990 this last winter. Can I ask what clutch master did you use ? :).  There is literally hours of reading and digesting information here. as with most older bikes, you will become the expert... Or at least have a good idea of whats going on. :good2:

George, I asked for an FJR1300 clutch master and specified 14mm. I received a Nissin, which I don't think were normal on a Yamaha, but it is black, has the rectangular reservoir (not the urine cup) and adjustable lever. All good.

Cheers, Dazza
