Title: Rode it
Post by: oz.fj on April 24, 2013, 06:52:34 PM
Went for a ride on my new 89 yesterday and it was Great!!
However discovered a problem with the front suspension ( about the only thing the PO didn't Mod)
Whilst under hard braking hit a bump and it bottomed out.
A little unnerving to say the least. Found one of the fork seals leaking.
Have run my fork Seal Mate around it and it appears to have stopped.
Now to address the lack of oil issue. Bought some 15 weight oil to change into it today.
And a few pics....

The screen is a double bubble off a Honda Blackbird and the pic does not do it justice (http://fjowners.com/gallery/4/975_24_04_13_5_06_41.jpeg)

Nice bike ! Double bubble off a Honda Blackbird you say, UMMMMMMM.
My bike did the same when I bought it , I dumped the fluid and went to 15 W, now all is fine.

Hey Rod
The screen fits quite well with some modification, also great wind deflection.
The helmet is a R Jays Scorpion GP3.  It's a great fit just a little noisy but not so much with the new screen

Wondered about the rjays helmets, I've had problems with some of they're bags ect , but plenty of ppl use them, , you may start a trend with the honda screen,  some of the guys are tall and like to get out of the breeze

I had a little trouble with my RJays tail bag on this years rally.
Not entirerly the bags fault.
We were riding the twisties between Nambioda and Dorigo and
on one of the rare straight sections, the rain cover came off the bag
into the rear sprocket. Pulling the guard up and over the rear tire.
Causing the ass end to shake. Thought I had a flat tyre.
Lucky we had fellow FJ"ers following to get the cover out of the sprocket
while I changed my undies :pardon:

Ouch, could of ended badly, , I've only had zips malfunction or the bags hole easily,  although my first 87l one was out in all weather every day doing the 5 hours travel to work And back, ,this one was second hand and still working on one main zip

After receiving some great tuition at the man shed day from Baldy and a custom Monkey Made fork tool.
I changed my fork oil yesterday.According to the manual the oil that was in it, was very close to the correct measurement from the top 169mm. When we last changed oil on the other bike we went for 15w and 130mm down.Which equals 425ml
So I went for that with great results. NO more bottoming out or excessive diving while under brakes :yahoo:

Mmmm, His 'n' Hers FJs. I like!.  So with that screen Darran you like it alright?

I'm waiting for some funds to gather then I'm going to order some front valves/springs/seal kit etc to revamp my poor leaking forks. Haven't pulled the forks apart really yet except to change the springs, should be interesting, lol.

Don't mind the screen at all. Great wind deflection compared to stock.
l think it really suits the bike but judge for yourself
