Title: Shipped the head
Post by: aviationfred on April 21, 2013, 03:25:37 PM
It has been a much frustrating last couple of months. I took the bike to a local mechanic shop to have the head rebuilt. After 2 months all I have to show is the head off the bike, nothing else has been done  :dash1: :dash2: :diablo:. I picked up the bike and the head from the mechanic shop. The head is on it's way to RPM for the rebuild.

In the mean time, I have installed a much louder horn, RPM fork brace and a headlight cover, saddly the rear hugger fender will not work. The tire rubs badly.

Sorry about the head. Seems to be catching........ Which rear hugger did you use ? Sooner or later I will probably need one. I modded the front part of my rear fender to get easy access to the f4i shock.

I used the following Link as a guide. The Fender in the write up is a 90', I used a 92'. I am not sure why mine will not work, same size wheel and tire. The only difference that I see is different vents on the fender.

Anyone that has a stock rear wheel is more than welcome to this fender.

At a minimum have Randy clean up the ports a bit for you - these motors love to breath!  So much cheaper to do it now than later...

Sorry to hear about all the problems with the head but Randy will have you fixed up in no time. To bod the fender will not fit, Let me check and see if it will fit my T-Ace swingarm maybe I can help you with that.

The article indicates he used it on a 160/70 – 17 tire and it looks like it was tight.  I do like the looks of it.... Just need something to fit a 180 tire.

Sorry to hear that the fender didn't fit Fred.  That's a bummer.  I hate to say it but I think the '92 version is a different fender.  If you compare closely, the vents are different, but also the attachment 'bosses' at the left side are different and the chain guard on the one you have pictured has a scoop shape on the front of it; not so on the '90.

I measured the inside width of the '90 GSXR rear fender that I've got and it measures 7-5/8" at the top before it starts to taper down.  That should give you a measurement to compare yours to.  Also, there is a typo in the writeup.   The tire I have mounted is a 170/60-17, not a 160/70-17 as stated.

I've attached a link to a post of mine where I had measured the widths of the mounted tires comparing the stock to the GSXR rear and FZR front. Tires are Avon radials on the stock rims and Conti Road Attack 2's on the GSXR and FZR rims.

As you mentioned, the fender you have may fit a stock rear wheel quite nicely which would be a good option for someone out there in the FJ world with a stock rear and a hankering for a hugger.

Scratch that.  It just occurred to me, I think the brake and stay would be in the way.  No workie.
