Title: Chin Fairing Heat Shield Material Source?
Post by: threejagsteve on September 21, 2009, 08:11:04 PM
Does anyone know of a source for good-quality heat shield material that could be cut to fit to replace the OEM stuff on the inside of the chin fairing?

(Hopefully something a bit better than the original stuff...)

Can you just put a layer of high-temp fiberglass on the inside?

I don't know anything about that stuff. Maybe somebody's tried it... ( ? )

The original part is a pad maybe 1/4 in. thick covered with aluminum foil.

summit racing sells something that works pretty good.

Reflect-A-Cool will reflect up to 1000 degrees F and will protect against a direct continuous temperature of 400 degrees F

It sticks good ....just clean the inside of the cowling thoroughly before applying.

My YZF can seemingly melt its way through anything. This time I tried a foil/foam duct insulation purchased from Home Depot. Pulling the lower shows no signs of burn through.

I trash canned the package, but its a thin metal foil bacling on an appx 1/8" thick faom insulation. It came in a roll and was found in the same area as heat and exhaust ducting.

I used the same stuff and its ridiculously cheap too.  Never burned or showed any signs of discoloration either.

As another data point.  I used that same HD stuff, except I found mine in Pep Boys, in the exhaust section, and it worked just fine with a standard exhaust.

Went to Home Depot over the weekend, found the right stuff - Duct Insulation, aluminum foil over 1/8 in. foam. 12 in. x 15 ft. roll, $14.73 + tax. Since sales tax here in CA is now almost 10% (http://i33.tinypic.com/20kdoac.gif) I dare not leave that out!

However, that 15 sq. ft. is probably enough for 4 chin scoops with careful pattern placement, easily enough for 3 if you want to double up in the areas right around the pipes.

Thanks for the tip, guys!

But that's a project for another day (or some evening)... Today it's sunny and gonna be 70* - I'm going riding!

Cheers, and Kookaloo! (http://i36.tinypic.com/ncghv7.gif)
