Title: Rear wheel upgrades
Post by: fintip on April 16, 2013, 02:29:12 PM
I tried using the search function for this, but to no avail...

I know the FZR1000 is a common front rim swap, and it's bolt on. Has anyone ever considered/tried a rear wheel swap from the same bike? I don't know all the factors that come into play when doing a wheel swap, but it seems to me that it's a 160, which shouldn't be too wide given that some people put 170's and even squeeze 180's in. 17". I don't know about the rotor fitment.

Now that I think about it--does the FJ 88&later rotor bolt right on to the front FZR1000 87/88 rim? Don't remember anyone mentioning it. Or does one just use the FZR rotor, and it sits in the right place for the later fork caliper mount points?

It'd be nice to have matching rims, though, and I imagine 160 should be an upgrade from our 150's, even if not quite as glamorous as a 180--I don't like the sound of everything being squeezed so tightly in there anyways, and probably out of ignorance have a hard time imagining that it's really that significant an upgrade. (Don't know what I don't know, but ignorance is bliss. :)

By the way, found this on an FZR forum:

YAMAHA FZR 1000 (87-88)
Front Rim Size: 17
Rear Rim Size: 18

Recommended Front Tire: MEZ4, size 120/70ZR17
Recommended Rear Tire: MEZ4, size 160/60ZR18

Here is a link for the FZR1000 rear wheel mod. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2256.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2256.0)

The rotors from a 88'-90' stock FJ wheel will bolt up to the 87'/88' FZR750R/1000 front wheel.

The GSXR750'1100 17' x 5.5" wheel with a 180 is not shoehorned in. The clearances are not an issue. This mod is thouroughly vetted and used by many members.

Huh. I could have sworn I'd read a few posts about 180's being hard to fit... Mr. Bean's tire is slightly offset, though he considers it a non-issue, while monkey mentioned his chain and tire cutting just a bit.

Thanks for the link, though the picture is down. Seems that he got the FZR wheel with spacers included by someone else, but it required some amount of customization.

Is it just me, or does the GSXR rim look pretty similar to the FZR rim? If you painted them both white, do you think you'd be able to tell the difference?

180's being hard to fit...

Some fit (Dunlop Roadsmart), some don't (Dunlop Sportmax Q2)...  I had mine "milled" by my chain as well.  I think the Q2 170 will fit and it's what I'm going with...  great tire that's relatively cheap.

and I say front...  you have too low profile tire on the back for a stock 16" FJ wheel.

The Q2 170 will clear the chain, the 180 fits after the chain removes some of the outer edge... Been there, done that....

Neither,   rear 93 GSXR and front 87/88 FZR. And at speed who can tell ?  The 180 Michelin Pilot Road clears fine with about 3/16 - 1/4 inch clearance on each side with the rear tire centered.

Gets great gas mileage.... who needs a large tank........ could use a cup holder though. :mocking:  Its work in progress. Got a new EK ZZZ in route to replace the cheap ass one from the PO that's on it now. WCR not far away.......  :drinks: :drinks:

To get the FZ1 wheel on your FJ, 17" or 18", you will need to get some parts machined to fit it. As for the front 87/88 bolts on, but for the back you would need to use a 89+ wheel..
There aren't that big of a difference beetween the 17" or the 18" except the selection of tyres.
18" will give you an perfect chain alignment as of 17" will have a small offset. Not critical offset and within good tolerance. Doc in UK have raced his FJ with this set up for 6 years so it will hold up :good2:

I just got mine FZ1 89 17"x5,5" rim today that I will be putting on sometime during this summer.

Cheers
