Title: Progressive (brand) Springs Heads-Up for Anyone Thinking About Getting Them
Post by: threejagsteve on September 20, 2009, 04:07:38 AM
FYI:

Progressive specifies their part no. 11-1126 fork springs for FJs. It has been mentioned that these might be a bit on the weak side. According to their website they have a rate of 0.63-0.89 kg/mm. They require you to cut a 2-1/4 in. spacer for each spring.

The http://www.racetech.com (http://www.racetech.com) spring rate calculator for street riding an FJ gives a recommended rate of 1.07 kg/mm for me, a 185-lb. rider.

Progressive also makes a set, part no. 11-1122, with the same diameter as 11-1126 and a rate of 0.80/1.25 kg/mm. These springs are 2 in. longer than 11-1126s, so would only need a 1/4-in. spacer if you wanted to retain full preload adjustment or could get by with no spacer if you put your adjustable preload on the #3 or #4 setting (I didn't measure them when my fork caps were off, but by eyeball one of those two should be real close to 1/4 in.).

I might add that I've just installed a pair of 11-1126s and have found them to be a decided improvement over stock, but I haven't done sag numbers yet and they may not be the optimal solution short of going to cartridge emulators.

Just food for thought...

Cheers,

When I had my last 85 FJ back 1000 years ago, I installed the 1126 springs with a 2" spacer as I recall, and they were a major improvement against nosedive and handling, I think I had changed to 15w oil also
I weighed 265 back then. more now so I will have to do some shopping again.

I put in some traxxion dynamics springs and I think they work a treat. They are a couple of inches shorter than stock - I just measured the difference and made a spacer out of plastic tubing though they did supply metal tubes - I couldn't cut them properly. The people I spoke to on the phone knew what weight was needed - I don't recall. The price was just over $100, delivery was prompt - installation time consuming but easy enuff. Two years later things are going strong.

For the straight rate springs anywhere from .95 to 1.10kg will work just fine.

most install the 1.05kg springs IIRC
