iI just picked up an 85 fj1100 for 300$ no spark coils test fine pick up coils are good kick stand switch clutch switch and ignition switch is good burned black wire o CD unit what could cause this as well as my switch diode on right side of bike is pretty charred any ideas I wanna. Buy a dynotek CD but I don't want to burn it up on the first day allmy fuses are good too cranks but no spark
tselI just want to know what would cause the burned wire so I know where to look its only burned from the cdi to wherever it goes to about 5 inches or so I've been told its a grounding issue but my grounds are good
Welcome to the group. With enough information, there is enough knowledge to overcome nearly any issue.
Look to see if there are any scorch marks on the frame near the burnt wire. You mention all of your fuses check good and no apparent electrical issues. It could be that the burnt wire chafed through it's insulation and caused the arcing.

I would replace all known bad items with stock parts. Check every wire for chaffing, breaks, cracked insulation and check all the connectors (pull each one apart a do a good visual check), From your description something shorted out. When I say check every wire and connection I mean everything from the tail to the nose.
Keep an eye out for modified or badly repaired wires. Pay special attention anywhere wires flex or bend (bars, steering head area).
Could have been as simple as coils or box it's self shorting out. Take your time and inspect. I am surprised that a fuse wasn't taken out.
Also if I was ready to start it after replacing all known parts I would have a volt meter on it to check the charging rate from the alternator. I don't know if it could cause your problem but regulators have been know to throw out higher voltages than required.
And "Welcome" ! Where are you located ? The more information we have the more help we can give you. There might be a member close to your area that would know more of what to look for. Do you have a service manual ?
George
none of the wires are burned except the diode assembly on the right side of the bike under the fairing and the one black wirw coils test at 2.7 ohms ignition switch is getting 12 volts pick up coils are testing at 162 ohmsiI haven't metered them yet I'll check all the connections Monday and there is no scorch marks anywhere I have most of the plastics off ilall lights work as far as I know too

Nope... it's a simple matter of effective communications..... If I did it ALL the time, then you could consider me pedantic.
